Today is just such a bad day already! Took the CBR down to Chiswick Honda for its 16000 mile service at 8am this morning. I asked on the phone how much it would cost a few days before and was quoted £300 for the service and MOT. When I get in there its gone up to £400 Shocked It'll probably go up to £500 by the time I get there. I know they have to do the valve timing but I might have well done the rest myself. Sod the bloody honda warranty I think I'll do it all myself in the future.

Then to add insult to injury I get my replacement bike, keep in mind that I rida a sports bike....... So the give me a F**KING PED!!!!!!

I have loads of stuff to get sorted today and I have to go round on this crappy little ped Mad To say I'm cheesed off at the moment is an understatment!

I'm just trying to picture someone on that in full race leathers Very Happy

As for the ped any maker that writes SH on the side is just asking for trouble as people complete the word Wink

Sympathies - but at least you still have wheels. Dealers around here aren't interested in customer satisfaction once they've got your money and locked you into the service/warranty combination Shocked

Maybe you could deliver a few pizzas while you've got the scoot. It may help pay for the service on the CBR?! Smile

Sounds like you are being tucked up. Challenge them on the cost and the fact that they told you 300 at first. Ask why it has gone up so much, was there unexpected work? They should ask you if there is extras that want doing. If it is labour charges, and it sounds like it might be, ask how long the book says a 16k service should take.

Don't let them rip you off! If they said £300, then £300 it will be! they gave you a quote - NOT an ESTIMATE. Tell them if it's going to be any more than £300 you want them to stop what they're doing and that you'll pick up the bike as it is.

The garage around the corner from me tried to rip me off when I had my forks done - tried to charge me an extra hours labour because they had trouble getting the forks apart. "It's not my problem if you can't get the forks apart" I told them! You quoted me x, and x is what I'm paying. If you're incompetent then maybe I should go to another garage...!

Well its all done now and now I'm £482.41 out of pocket! The labour time went up from 5 hours to 7 hours because "The fuel mapping was well out, but the vavle clearence was fine and didn't need adjusting." God knows why that took them 7 hours :S

Labour is £289.71

Parts are £76.32

Castrol GPS at £23.80

Sundries at 7.50

M.O.T. was £15.55

Then add all that bastard VAT and it comes to 482.41 Crying or Very sad

Here are 2 scans of the Recipt and Service Check sheet:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/service_check.jpg

https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=19832

Now anyone know any good sites where I can get a good pair of brake pads at a good price? don't think I will be able to afford much Sad

lol, sounds like a bit of a rip off to me Kev... I would have loved to see you in full leathers on the ped Laughing You should have come down to my work, how I would have laughed Thumbs Up

Anyway, £290 for labour at 7 hours (which is too much time) is £41 p/hour... Did they have an apprentice working on ya bike or something?? You should have got a quote from Colin Collins or somewhere first, just to see what difference it would have made, although I know you don't like CCs!

Hopefully its made a vast improvement on the bike with the valve timing and fuel mapping sorted and your happy with that side of things!

Take it to a private motorcycle engineer who you trust to do the work in future.

Last time I took my supermoto for a full service (Including replacing the coolant and fork oil which is a pain in the arse on that bike) it was under 200 quid at my local one-man bike garage...I am also confident he did everything he was supposed to, which is more than I can say for the main dealer.

As long as you can show the bike was serviced when it was supposed to be by a competant motorcycle mechanic, they would be on very tricky ground trying to wriggle out of repairing the bike during the warranty period.

The warranty itself is a contract between yourself and Honda, it may well be worth checking the small print to see if there is actually a stipulation that the bike must be dealer serviced.

If there is such a stipulation then the warranty agreement becomes invalid if you don't get it dealer serviced BUT you are still protected under the Sale of Goods Act. The dealer has effectively stated that they would expect the bike to last as long as the standard warranty lasts by virtue of offering it in the first place. If it breaks down due to faulty parts or workmanship within that period you are legally entitled to demand the problem is remedied. It would be up to a court to decide this in the end if they flat refused to fix it but I couldn't see it going that far.

It may well take a bit more shouting about it if there was a problem, but in my recent experience, manufacturers warranties are not worth the effort of keeping them up anyway (took my dealer four months to get my bike back on the road after the conrod snapped).

My car is still under warranty and I have stopped having it dealer serviced because it is both inconveniant and overpriced. Just to show I am putting my money where my mouth is.

Also, what sort of a fitter takes SEVEN hours to do that lot? Fair enough if they had to re-shim the valves. SEVEN HOURS! They are having a laugh.

If I actually did everything on that list as an amateur mechanic and tinkerer (which you can bet they didn't) I would say four hours tops, and that is doing it in my shed with no power tools or bike lift.

I am in the wrong business.

Sorry to rub it in, but you're being shafted!
My local bike fettlers(Tekmotive) charged me a shade over 250 for a full service(all the bits on your sheet + others) and a new D208 front tyre on my Gixer.

FFS that is really taking the piss. How they could have handed over that bill without cringing I don't know.

As for the Honda warranty - You do not need to get your bike serviced by a Honda main dealer for it to remain valid

I just had mine done at Tippetts and they relieved me of £114 for oil/filter change (8000 mile service) and they didn't even clean it. They charged £70.50 p/h labour.

I only took it to a Honda place so they could check my cam chain tensioner under warranty. But I won't go to a main dealer again, only for warranty-related stuff.

If they inspected the valve clearances, it would take some time (16 of them and got to get the top cover of the engine etc.)
