I had insurance for a year, took out another year (apparently would save me £100 as apposed to paying monthly), only had the insurance for 5 months, passed my test and was moving up to a bigger bike.

I figured i'd keep with them to save losing 5 months of NCB... rung them up to let them know abotu passing my test, it reduced by insurance by about £100, but would only send me £7 of it back due to covering their own expenses (??). I explained i wanted to move a bike and they said it would cost me another £200 to switch bikes and that it actually didn't affect my insurance premium, this was just their policy. I asked them how much it would be next year and they claimed i'd have to pay a ~£900 renewal fee.

So i asked how much to end this insurance and move to new one. They agreed that i'd lose my 5 months and they'd charge me a _new_ fee of £1900 on top of the £420 i'd already paid for the year on the 125, with a renewal fee of £1900 each year.

To be honnest, they we'ren't making much sense at all. Even both the woman on the other side of the phone couldn't understand it but were eagily asking for my debit card details...

In the end i left them, paid the cancellation fee and they were apparently supposed to return me about £200, but i've kept chasing it and haven't got any further. I've moved to Honda insurance which now costs me £270 :-p

Although many companies levy a charge for paying montly, I often chose this option as if you cancel, you simply stop paying them.

If you owe out money they are all over you like flies on shit. When It comes to giving refunds - they add their 'admin charges' and you don't see them for dust Evil or Very Mad

Sounds like you have been buggered about something awful.

I just added another bike to my policy at Carole Nash and they charged me £30 (all in).

When I have changed policies midway in the past, they have charged me a £20 admin fee then shifted the balance of the existing policy over to the new one (but I did have to start another full years insurance with the new one).

Who were you with so I can make a note never to use them.

I can't see why they charge so much on insurance premiums, as they seem to make enough money out of charging £20-£30 for 20 seconds worth of computer typing.

Next time tell them to email you the policy document and you can do you own "admin" Thumbs Up

Although not always! Beware of this one. When you take out monthly insurance you are actually entering into a credit agreement with the broker, you borrow the money for a years insurance which is paid to the underwriter. You then repay the broker in monthly installments.

Sometimes you can cancel a policy and land up still having to pay the installments. What is more, there is sometimes a clause whereby the broker keeps the refunded balance too.

Basically, they do you up the arse well and truly.

Several people on here have been BADLY stung with this when they have changed their policies and landed up paying for both the old policy AND the new one.

Yeah, I imagine you're right - Still, Id rather have the money in my account than pay out and wait for it to be refunded.

I feel conned by car insurance. its a total rip off.
I bet is it wasn't mandatory you had it they would soon sort their act out.

I've just insured my 400 with carole nash, they quoted me yesterday at over £400 cheaper than they did a month ago.
No other company could come close to matching it, and you get free legal cover, breakdown and puncture cover with them.

I was impressed. Smile

What cover is that for?

Was on the phone to them for about 20 minutes earlier today asking about transfer fees to the typical 600 sports. They wouldnt cover me on the gixxer or zx6, yet it was a direct swap over from the 9 year old Bandit to a 99 R6 worth £3k, still fully comp as well. Laughing Top notch insurer, cant fault them at all. Even the lass on the phone was very helpful, sounded nice as well.

Some insurance companies are just out to have a laugh.

When I went from a SR125 to a ER-5 my SR insurers wanted £500 to upgrade or something silly on the £230 I allready paid.

So I rang around and got a quote for a year on the ER-5 for £252 with Motorcycle direct.

so with 9 months left on the SR policy I cancelled it and took out a new policy on the ER-5 as it was WAY cheaper thus loosing my no claims on the SR however not a big deal as it was only 3 months.

I then proceeded to cancel insurance and get a re-fund of about £70 after all the "fee's" had been sorted out, scum bags!

£160 for 3 months cover an absolute rip off!

So with my new policy with motorcycle direct started in december and come last month (july) I am upgrading to a bandit with 6 months left on the policy so cancelling and getting a new quote was not really an option as I would loose that no claims for 6 months so was prepared to be stung with the upgrade quote.

Rang Motorcycle direct, the bike is worth £1000 more and is 4 insurance groups up and faired...

They wanted £15.75 to upgrade.

A proper happy chappy to hear that!

I apologise for the long and somewhat pointless story here.

Short version, go with a good company!

I use Yamaha Insurance who quoted me £520 for my first bike (SZR660) which was quite good, they too entered me into a credit agreement for monthly payments so I suspect if I canceled I would still have to make the repayments.

When I phoned up to ask about changing my bike to a ZX6R (big difference, SZR=48bhp) they quoted me £40 one-off all-in fee to change.

Pretty good, shame about the credit agreement.
