Hi

Yes, some Russian guy bought TVR. It is in this weeks MCN about TVR buying Benelli. They are talking about moving the factory to Blackpool, but not sure that would work (Benelli engines are built in Italy, by Franco Morini I think, and that is where most of their stuff is sourced).

All the best

Keith

Just read it in this week's MCN too, but for some reason, an Italian name sounds more evocative? At least, they'll have an excuse to skimp on finish on build quality being a TVR.

Also happens to be German. And the Lada is basically an old Fiat design that they bought.

However I doubt that having a Russian playboy owner is going to make much difference to the engineering.

It could be interesting. Not that much space is required to build bikes in the numbers Benelli do, so factory space should be easy. Not sure how TVR will cope with a high cost, low volume and low margin product like a bike. After all their current expertise is in building fairly expensive cars with a lot of labour intensive processes, and doing that to make a bike would probably result in prices around those of the limited edition version of the Tornado (which they are still trying to sell years after they built them).

On the other hand, if they really are going to have a future now might be a good time to buy a Benelli while they are cheap.

All the best

Keith

but dont expect production to be shifted to blackpool anytime soon.
Italy has tough regulations concernign trade / industry and especially when it means foreign investment wanting to re-locate a business abroad. The italian government does'nt like unemployment and place restrictions so that a company cannot just up-sticks and move, its a long process and can take many years.

Also in recent reviews, many people and journalists have commented on how build quality on TVR cars is improving since the russian dude took the company over, so maybe wonderfull things will happen to benelli?

Plus with the superbike that TVR designed (featured in MCN) they could be onto a winner and make some very fast road / race bikes.

The take-over in my opinion could help re-launch the british motorcycle industry which is a good thing in every aspect.

Personally i can see TVR runnign the company as benelli for 3-4 years to get used to running / developing a motorcycle production company, then i think they will re-brand it as TVR, as this will be the easiest, quickest, cheapest method of going into motorcycle production as they wont have to start from scratch.

As the forums resident Benelli owner, I was really glad to hear this news Thumbs Up
People put Benelli's down for poor build and reliability, however in my experience they are no worse than any other manufacturer. Treat them well and they are fine, treat them badly and they fall apart.

As for the take over, as long as they keep Adrian Morton on as designer (an Englishman Smile) then I don't think they will go wrong. When I met Adrian he was saying that Benelli's head man wouldn't let him design the bikes quite as he wanted, hopefully a new owner will change that a bit.

Can't wait to see what happens next Thumbs Up

another possible scenario is that TVR start making their own brand bikes, using the Benelli factory, but assembling them in the UK and selling them as a separate "British" bike from Benelli.

Improved maybe, but it would have been difficult for it to have got worse!

Given that it was in MCN I suspect it had far more to do with their tame artist than with TVR.

Maybe, but marketing wise that would mean 3-4 years wasted selling a dead make of motorcycle, and then starting again with TVR.

All the best
