I have just got back from a course at the Nurburgring and managed to cover 460 miles on the track in just 2 days. Very Happy

The best thing about it was out of 150 people on the course only 5 were British and we were the ONLY group not to be passed on the track. Cool

If anyone is thinking of going do it. It is the best bit of tarmac on the planet.

Yep it certainly is one hell of a place that everyone should try once.

Who did you go with and how did you get involved? I was over there last year and want to go back, was the circuit closed to everyone else apart from you guys or was it the usual open track free for all?

It was a course run by Motorrad which is a German MCN type mag.
I know a bloke who is the only English instructor on the course.
The track was closed to everyone else so it was quite nice not having to mix it with the cars.

Still, take it easy, they say ride it like a country road that you do not know and also NOT to time yourself or shit will happen. I'm sure its alot of fun thought, wouldn't mind trying it before I die...

after reading the thing about accidents in the link that jverdoes posted, the vague ambition of going there one day is gone

cars and bikes on at the same time sounds a very bad combination to me

What did it cost you, dare I ask?

Have you done any 'proper' trackdays (ie short track).

You are one lucky man then VTR SP1.
How did the other brits get on the course,? Is it a case of knowing someone or just finding out when the mag is running it and getting on it that way?
That must cost them an arm and a leg to hire the 'ring for a couple of days,so god knows how much the punters would have to pay.

Don't forget that price is for the normal free for all laps.

With the track closed to everyone else and instruction for 150 people for 2 days that aint going to be cheap but well worth it in my opinion. The 'ring is an outstanding piece of road but you need to keep one eye on your mirrors on a normal lap so to have it closed to everyone except those on the course must be great Very Happy

What kind of times were you doing?

I saw Jeremy Clarkson do it in just under 10mins i dont know if that is good or not.

Thought the bikes would be going alot quicker but he overtook loads of bikes.

It cost just over £600 with accomidation for 3 nights, food and instruction.
A 25 lap ticket is 300 euro's and a single lap is 15 euro's so I think £600 is quite good value.
I have only done 1 other trackday before but with the instruction given that was not really a problem.
The other brits on the course all know the instructor and were asked if they wanted a place.
We were not timing ourselves as this is not really the aim of the course but my mate did on one lap and lets just say that Clarkson would need a faster car. Mr. Green

A BMW M5 is capable of something around 08:25-30, I can't remember precisely. A decent (as in quick but non-lethal) lap with, say, an R1, would probably be about 08:15-08:25.

Wondering how it compares.

So far, I can see me enjoying short-tracks a lot more, but wouldn't mind giving it a go at some point.

G,
It's a lot harder to learn the track or even remember where your going compared to a short track. I guess you really need to go to make your mind up.

That's why I think I'd enjoy short tracks more - as you I can ride at 100% of my ability (though not recently), while on such tracks you have to hold back for various reasons.

I think G's next task should be to take the R6 around the ring and see what time he gets.

Hands up.

With the 'ring you tend to learn it in sections as it's so big then put them togeather,i watched loads of video laps beforehand to have a good idea of where it went and what was coming up next paying particular attention to the nost dangerous bits.

G, As far as riding at 100%,the 'ring has very little run off so there is no room for error at many places especially at some of the faster sections. For me the 'ring is so different to short circuits because of the length and layout there is nothing to match it. I find short circuits tend to get a bit sterile and i tend to loose the impression of speed. Silverstone is a very good example of this, which is good if you're trying to push yourself to go faster but a different attitude altogether from riding at the 'ring where you're very aware of how fast you're going.

As VTR said the only way to know is to go there...fancy a trip Wink

If someone wants to pay for me Wink.

Silverstone is the widest circuit I've ridden; try somewhere like the mountain section of cadwell for a better sense of speed. However it's a long time since the feeling of going fast as seriously 'excited' me, don't really get that much adrenaline when racing or anything. It's more the skill/art that I enjoy (not that I've been displaying much of either recently Sad ).

Think I have just about mastered it on the Playstation, so might stand a right wee crack at it. Laughing
Know of a boy who done it on GT4 in 4.59.

Definately wouldn't mind going but there would be a lot of nutters.
