Ok, my dad spent all yesterday getting the timing absolutely perfect. And he then failed to get it to start, and flattened the battery in the process. He was quite disheartened because he couldn't work out what was wrong.

I walk out there this morning, turn the key, hit the button. VROOOOM.

So there we go, the XJ starts.

But. There's quite a loud squeeking noise, which sounds very much like an over-tight cam chain. Although it could be something else, suggestions very much welcome.

Now what I need help with, is how to fix it. I've loosened off the nuts on the CCT and started the engine, hoping it would push it back to the right-ish position. But the squeeking is still there, although it may be quieter I can't really remember.

I can only really hear it at lower revs, but that could just be the engine noise drowning it out.

I think that's the only problem at the moment. Any help much appreciated. I'd like to get it sorted before Ace next sunday.

Hi

Well, at least it runs.

Generally you are not meant to run engines with the CCT unbolted.

Use a screw driver as a stethpscope to try and trace where the noise is coming from.

All the best

I think it's almost certainly from the Cam Chain.

My dad's suggested I run it gently for a while, let it bed in for a bit and do its thing. Since obviously there are parts from two different engines in there.

But at the moment it's running very badly, I think I may just need to adjust the tickover, but we'll see after some more prodding tomorrow.
