its nice when cars move over to let you go ,but 1 in 10 cars take this to far and erratically swerve into the cycle lane far to fast to check if there may be a cyclist using the lane Rolling Eyes I find this behavior rather disturbing as I'm also a cyclist !
Why do car drivers think we need so much space Thumbs Down

Hasn't someone on here witnessed a van doing this, hitting the curb and rolling over?

If we deem it safe to pass then we'll pass, and we won't think it's safe if there's a maniac driver swerving over the road!

I'm not really complaining - when I first started riding the opposite was more common. Cars would see you coming and move over to the white line to try and stop you passing. Rolling Eyes

Although it is amusing when cars pull over so far! How much room does a Punto driver think my GSXR needs to get past at 40mph? Laughing

I think it is quite funny when cars swerve over the road. That is when you know they have seen you. One guy almost mounted the curb. I wasn't even overtaking but they sit 1 inch from the side of the road so until you do pass, their safety is at more risk than normal so I normally pass if they don't move back over.

I'd rather they just stay where they are. If its safe to pass I'll pass without them serving all over the road.

In my experiance they allways pull over for you to pass when its unsafe and pull back over when they think you wont pass when it is safe.

Sometimes I have been doing like 80mph and a car would be going 78mph so i graduially catchj upto it but decide to stay behind it. They start swerving around untill you pass them so i find myself passing even though i dont want too.

Noticed this the other day. The car slows down and pulls over to the left to let me past. Then i noticed it was a gti. As i got closer, he sped off Confused Once i had caught up with him again, i saw him waving his hands around then looking into his rear view mirror. idiot.

i made, "what the fuck do you want" gestures.

Is quite annoying when you just want to sit with the traffic, you feel like you owe them an overtake after they have spent time moving out of your way! doesnt help me as my lights are always on so car drivers spot me in a second.

not sure whats worse, people deliberately getting in your way like it used to be years ago, or people manically swerving out of the way.........

You'll find it very annoying when someone spots you, goes as close to the kerb as possible to aid you in overtaking but al they do is spit gravel up onto you and your bike. Chipping your helmet and bike. Thumbs Down

Yeah I’ve started to notice this, I’m sure they never used to do this.
But recently I come up behind someone, and usually the make a little room, but some will just ram the wheel one way and nearly career off into the curb!! lol

Just wondering, when someone moves over for you do you acknowledge them? I always give a wave or wiggle the fingers with my left hand.

Generally for some reason the drivers on the A19 up to York pull over and are ok Thumbs Up

Even if someone does pull over though I'll only overtake when I think it's safe to do so (like would it really be a good idea with that HGV coming towards me).

Again, providing it's safe, I will always acknowledge them pulling over with a raised left hand (more so on country roads, in town I'm concentrating on the next think in front that could kill me Wink).

As an aside I did talk to a driving instructor. She would never, and tells her pupils not to, pull over for a bike behind. It's up to the bike to overtake, preferably when safe to do so. I think it would be a fail on the car test if you pulled over.

It's worse when they do it when you come up behind then on double whites. You feel obliged to go past them coz they made such effort to get out of your way. I once got pulled for this.

Double whites mean you cannot cross them. Not no overtaking.
It's OK to pass if safe to do so.
Good judgement is required, but always err on the safe side. When you're in plaster up to your 'haw maws' or 'punnani' then you can ponder the relevant pros and cons of your last manoeuvre.

Don't follow so close to the car in front. Some drivers think of it as aggressive/company rep type behaviour.

You're on a bike, you can pass 10 times easier than a dummie in a car later.

Patience is what we need. Not Patients!

I've noticed this sometimes too, i just stick my left thumb out or wave to them with my left hand if they do. I've also noticed the opposite, people moving into the middle of the road so you cannot get passed, bit silly really when they are stuck in traffic and you can freely fit between them. Cars that do this usually get a sign of acknowledgement off me, be it a finger or a "wanker" sign.

Always wave or thumbs up if I can Thumbs Up Since I started riding, My Missus has got very good at getting out of the way of bikers Very Happy I'm amused that a lot of you are complaining that people get out of the way. Even if they do it erroneously they're only trying to do you a favour. Honestly bikers are a miserable bunch Very Happy

Someone moved over for me today, as I passed, went to acknowledge them with a little wave, but as I went to do so, a car in front of me changed lanes, so had to concentrate 100% on what was ahead. As a result, I didn't end up thanking the driver who moved over, who probably thought "inconsiderate c*nt" Thumbs Down

Ive actually got a tape i made last year with a bike mounted camera , it shows someone in an astra estate moving over and waving me by , if i had overtaken on his signal he would have put me straight into the front of an artic coming the other way over the brow of a hill.

The moral is wait until YOU can see clearly and ignore anybody else that thinks they are helping you.

What he said.

Often seems to happen IME when you move up prior to actually comitting to an overtake (a three-stage overtake as per Roadcraft) then actually find that you can't overtake (e.g. a car appears coming the other way.)

I tend to drop right back, then pick my moment to make a positive two-stage pass without having to adopt a following position.
