Just been thinking through fitting crash bobbins to my mint rvf400. A thought struck me, on the road crash bobbins may result in a large increase in damage instead of protecting said bike.

At low speed the bobbins act as an extra contact point with the road protecting the side panels and the motorcycle, in these incidents they save alot of cosmetic damage.

The problems im considering is what happens in a high speed off.
The bobbins act as an extra contact point but reduce the overall area coming into contact with the road massively. As this area is so massively reduced the vehicle will slow down much more slowly. This isnt a problem on the track but on the road there is so much road furniture and kerbs the extra slide distance may result in massively increased damage. Going from a badly damaged side to a completed written off bike.

This was discussed in Ride a few months back. Conclusion was that after crashes, the cost of repair was less on bikes with them fitted.

Imagine the damage to your bike's frame if the bike slides onto a curb and the crash bung hits the curb Shocked

That said, I think they're worth it for the average crash. I got mine fitted about a week after I got my bike. I should really update my pictures Smile I think they really suit the bike. Obviously depends on the bike though.

Where do they fit on your bike? Presumably they have to cut the fairings? Might have to go through your decals ???

Here's mine with the crash bungs. Look at my signature for pictures without.

From what i've heard, they save a lot of cosmetic damage, however there have been a few stories about frames being bent after highsides due to landing on the bung with the bike flipping and rotating at such a high rate. Still, i suppose if you're going fast enough for the bung to wreck your frame, your bike is going to be totally screwed anyway.

They can be fitted through the fairings on the vents with an adaptor. I wouldnt be willing to bet my money on the adaptor.

They would have to drill Sad and the fairings are carbon fibre so im trying to work out whats best!

Think im going to risk the cosmetic damage, each side is protected by carbon fibre fairings, then carbon fibre engine guards, then carbon fibre frame guards.

If you're not bothered bout damaging your fairings, dont bother with crash bungs - the fairing is going to save mechanical damage, the bung on a faired bike would only really be for the sake of the fairings. Having said that, the thought of the cost of replacing carbon-fibre fairings is rather nasty! Maybe some fairing protection tape would be useful, it'll save on stone chips, too.

I doubt I'll be buying a set for anything other than the rear swing arm. If I'd had them on during my first off, my bike'd probably have been at the bottom of the ravine instead of sitting two feet from the edge. Neutral
