i dont think its illegal, but try it and see, if you cant hear the traffic around you and it distracts you from riding then dont listen to music,
Listening to music does'nt bother me, sometimes i do and sometimes i dont. When i do, i have it at a volume where i can still hear the traffic around me

it isn't illegal cos a lot of the big tourers have radio and headphone sockets in them, surely your not expected to listen to the radio on these bikes when its parked up in your garage

i listen to my mp3 player sometimes on my bike and find that it can be annoying, especially when your on motorways as you cant hear anything cept your engine and the wind on your helmet

personally i think theres nothing better to listen to then the sound of a large in-line four engine reaching the red line then peacefully calming down before a sweeping hearpin bend on a country road
