I didnt put this in new bikers, as its not about my new rider of a brother!

Basically my brother rides a CG125, and he rides on a CBT so he displays L plates on the front and back of it.

Sometimes he is kind and lets me ride it, to test top end, and gear changes, and stuff if we do work on it.

Thing is I have a full bike licence, am i obliged to take his L plates off if im the rider of it? It seems a pain to take them off for the 5 minutes im riding it?

Also if i give him a lift on it, do i have to take the L plates off it?

all help appreciated!

Yep your supposed to take them off, especially if your taking him as a passenger, I think you may be able to get points for it, dont quote me on that though.

techynically yes, you should take the L plates off, but how often do you see cars driving about with Ls on, when it's OBVIOUS that daddy is driving, and not whomsoever the Ls were intended for.

be aware tho, that if you do things that a learner isn't allowed to do (like take pillions, and go on the motorway) you are making it WAY more likely you'll get stopped by plod.

Presuming you are insured to ride it?

I don't know about an official answer, but when I was still on my L's my other half often rode my bike (a couple of times with me pillion) without taking them off.

We never got stopped or pulled up, but that may just have been because we didn't get seen.......

Certainly when my fella is at work he doesn't take the Ls off all the bikes he is test riding after fixing or servicing them, it would take him forever.

Well im insured to ride any bike on my car insurance, yet not on my bike insurance funnily enough Shocked

We are only talking short journeys here around town, id never go long distance two up on a cg!

My only worry is that if i get pulled over for a random "safety check", and i get a points for displaying L plates when i passed my test?

If i was gonna stick him on the back then i would take the back one off as its only two screws. However the front one is stuck pretty tight!

I thought if you used black tape and put it in a X over the L that it means that the rider/driver isn't a learner?

My car insurance covers me on bikes as well, as does my bike insurance.

When I passed my bike test I ripped them off there and then.

Didn't want to be seen with L plates, it was embaressing enough being 33 and still a learner.
