Right, i got an immobiliser / alarm / remote start thingy from craggles the other day... been to fit it today and after ive connected all the wires up... i go to turn the ignition on and it just blows fuses... it used to run on a 20amp fuse...
ive just been down the shop and ive tested a 30amp fuse in it... and it blows that after a few seconds of being on the ignition... havent even tested the alarm thingy yet...
Ive done a few connections just by wrapping the wires together and covering them in insulating tape... i know its a cowboy job but its just to save me wasting couplings if they are wired up wrong... so could it be that causing it to blow fuses?
Is the alarm system going to need me to put a larger fuse on the bike to be able to run it? should it need a higher than 30amp fuse?
Have i wired it up wrong? or put a crappy earth in somewhere?
Also there are wires, for example the ones that go to your indicators to make them flash... do they just join into the exisiting wires... or do you cut and disgard the wire it joins to?

Its wired wrong. You shouldn't need to up your fuse ratings.
As for where its wired wrong, can't say as Im not there. ____________________ The BCF's very own Party boy! Though he's getting old and feeling it!

Stop putting higher fuses in for a start. They protect all your electrics (a sure fire way of killing things like CDI's)....
As far as the alarm goes due to how they connect the the system i cant see you having very many problems:
1. Power and Earth - You shouldnt need to cut any wires to connect these. If you have connected the power to earth and vice versa that will cause the alarm fuse to blow but not the bike fuse...
2. Indicator fees - Again no cutting should be needed. As long as these are just connected to each of the positive feeds for left and right they should be fine.
3 Immobiliser - This one does require cutting and should have 2 wires from the alarm. as long as you cut the wire you wish to imobilise and connect one side to one wire from the alarm and connect the other to the other wire from the alarm it should be ok. Even if you get this wrong it shouldnt blow fuses, just stop the bike from starting....
Look at where you have made the connections, check all the wires around them, and make sure you havent cut (or knicked) the wires around them. Wires shorting onto other wires or onto the frame is a sure fire way of blowing fuses.
Unfortunatly you will need to check the loom, all the wires and all the, connections to check that nothing is shorting. If it still blows fuses remove the alarm. Then if it keeps blowing them you will have inadvertantly knicked or cut a wire and it is shorting out. if it fixes it you have either fitted the alarm incorrectly or it is broken.
I'm glad my alarm went on without any problems now
What alarm is it btw? |
