Just wondered as a lot of you have one or recommend one as a first big bike but looking through manufacters web sites the seem to jump straight from 125 - 600 (with the odd 500 commuter bike in the running). From what I understand most 400 sports were grey import anyway km/h (can be changed) but km ODO fixed so why if the demand is here do they not make them anymore (from what I understand) or ever for uk sales.

they are mde in Japan, for japan to fit with theiur regulations, which make it bonkers expensive to have anything bigger than 400.

I suppose the manufacturers are happy to see a destination for all these old 400's in japan, meaning they can sell more new ones.

now that the 33bhp limit has been in force for a while, there's more of a reason to have 400's in the UK and it's something that might change in time.

Depends where you look I suppose. I bought my Honda Bros 400 straight off the crate from Boxhill Motorcycles all those years ago. If you look through the classifieds in the Bike mags and trader you will see all sorts of 400's.

My mate just bought her ZXR 400 via ebay.

You're right in that the 400 sports bikes were/are grey import. Made for the Japanese market. The restrictions there make it popular (have to go through hoops to get bigger machinery). However, this market is very fashion/style driven and sports bikes are now not the thing to be seen on in Japan. So that's why they're becoming scarce.

I'm not sure what the current fashion in Japanese 400s is, I think someone mentioned cruisers. If that's the case I can see why grey importers aren't falling over themselves getting them here as that market is very specific and quite small.

The rules and restrictions in Europe don't make it viable, cost-effective, profitable (you choose the words) to distribute 400s. I guess the market wouldn't be big enough. Besides, sports bikes appears to be mainly a UK thing, sales in other countries aren't that wonderful.

I'm sure others on this forum can add more.

And also the Jap 400's are usually very low down, for the tiny Japs that will be riding them, hence why I'm not looking at the Jap 400's apart from the ZXR.

I was told that the law in Japan on 400cc was more to do with their full-licence test requiring the bike to be lifted. As Japanese folk are often physically smaller than westerners, this led to a sports bike 400cc class weighing in at less than 170Kg. Over the last few years the weight of 600cc, 750cc and 1000cc bikes ahs dropped to about the same, so, I think, the 400cc class is no longer made. So you'll have to buy used - I think the RVF and ZXR were tha last in production.

tsk thats nonsense , I weigh in at 11 stone ish (mostly fat) and I can lift my honda NTV650 which claims to be 185kilos which I don't believe at all since with oil , brake fliud , petrol top box and chain in the box I reckon is 210kilos.

heck I've seen a really small woman pick up a GT550 and those babies dry are 205kilos

Anyone seen a GSXR1000 K5 yet? There's barely any physical difference in size between that and a 400cc import. The 400cc market is quite popular, with all shaped and sized riders owning them. One of the guys over on 400gb is a bodybuilding champion!

400s aren't exactly scarce, there's always an NC30 or CBR or Superfour appearing in the local rags down my way, just have a browse through Biketrader if you're having trouble finding one.

Theres a massive difference betwen seat height on the K5 thou and a CBR/VFR 400. I can /just/ about sit flat footed on a K5, on a cbr i can sit flat footed and knees bent. The K5's are light yes, but they arnt light because of their size, it's because of the materials used (as you probably know.)

K5
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
Overall Length: 2,030 mm (79.9 in)
Overall Width: 710 mm (28.0 in)
Overall Height: 1,130 mm (44.5 in)
Wheelbase: 1,405 mm (55.3 in)
Ground Clearance:
Seat Height: 810 mm (31.9 in)
Dry Mass: 166kg (366 lbs)

CBR1000RR
Length x Width x Height 2,025 x 720 x 1,120mm
Wheelbase 1,410mm
Seat Height 820mm
Ground Clearance 130mm
Dry Weight 179 kg

The K5 is actually taller andd longer than a cbr100rr according to the manufacturers websites.

Not having trouble finding one as I'm not currently looking but I bought my 125 new (not passed test yet) and would prefer to buy the replacement new in a year two's time. Its not like buying a car where you have to get a loan for 3-5 years just to get a crappy 10,000 hatchback.A decent new bike can be had for 3,500 - 4,000 so I'll start saving next year. Feel more confident on something I know hasn't been crashed or thrashed and not properly maintained

Lately, young guys in japan are fond of scooter custom.
They seem to have bike as part of fashion.
That's why replicas disappeared in this class.
Young guys think these ones as cool. Do you understand their sense? We can see many customs in Shibuya, Roppongi etc.

Like a big version of a chav's scooter. Lol no offense mate, but it seems alot of japanese people have some strange taste. Just as i'm led to believe the car modders there are very into ultra extended bumpers and worryingly long exhaust pipes and wide arches.

The problem with the 33bhp limit is that nearly everyone over the age of 21 will take direct access and so not have to deal with it. Since most 17yr olds cannot afford brand new bikes, there is no demand for bikes targetted to this market.

A little bit old but here I have sales top 10 in Japan.(04/Jan-Apr registered total)
My description was a little bit wrong(wasn't scooter only).
[400cc]
Rank--Name-------Number--Genre
1--CB400SF---------1,898--Naked Sports
2--Dragstar400-------920--American
3--SR400---------------885--Retro
4--CB400SS------------676--Retro
5--Skywave400-------412--Scooter
6--Shadow400--------319--American
7--Zephyr--------------225--Naked Sports
8--XJR400R------------223--Naked Sports
9--ZRX400-------------183--Naked Sports
10-Intruder400-------168--American

Regarding Sportsbike, CB400SF is topsales mainly due to VTEC Mechanism equipped powerful engine.Yamaha/Kwak don't sell as many as Honda.
No.2-6 are occupied with American/Retro-style bikes. Many young guys prefer custom and choose bike as custom base.

[250cc]
1--Majesty250------2,189--Scooter
2--Skywave250-----1,688--Scooter
3--Fusion-------------1,317--Scooter
4--Grandmajesty----1,189--Scooter
5--Forza-----------------970--Scooter
6--Grasstracker--------703--Fashion
7--FTR223---------------685--Fashion
7--XR250----------------685--Offroad
9--250TR----------------591--Fashion
10-TW225--------------538--Fashion/Offroad

250cc class is occupied with non sports bikes.
Highest rank of sportsbike is Honet(342) rank 15. (very sad)
below 400cc class is designed only for Japanese Market so makers make what Japs like. over 401cc is designed for europe/american market (Japan Market is just an addition). We can buy sportsbikes thanks to foreign market.

[401cc over]
1--CB1300SF--------878--Sportsbike
2--CBR600RR--------491--Sportsbike
3--W650--------------435--Retro
4--ZRX1200----------395--Sportsbike
5--CBR1000RR-------371--Sportsbike
401cc over class need Full licence, so most riders who take the licence prefer sports bikes.

I agree. They are thinking scooter/bike as fashion tool.

Motor gangs 20years ago called those ultra extended bumpers as Projecting teeth spoiler, long exhaust as bamboo spears(very funny). I believe most of them are now driving long distance Trucks.
Most motor gangs never trouble truck drivers because they are seniors.
