Was down at the pitts at the Ulster Grand Prix last night and was talking to a scottish bloke with possibly the most piss taking number plate I have ever seen. It must have been about 4x1 and was mounted so it was pointing upwards facing the tail light. Laughing
I said "im sure you've got a lot of hassle about that" and he says "nah, had it on 2 years from buying the bike and never been pulled". He said it was speed camera proof too. Laughing

Dunno how he done it to be honest.

I saw a bike the other day with its number plate almost horizontal. Becoming a trend?

Small plates are a way of attracting unwanted attention. Really don't get the point.
Then they adopt the "while I'm here I'll just check the rest of the bike" attitude.

Out here in Joburg I've seena few people put a lega plate on a hinge and hook it up to an old 'choke' lever. At the first sign of a camera its zipped horizontal in an instant.

There was one on the back of a ZXR6 in DK, it was about 4x1 aswell. Looked really funny, quite un-believable.

A mate of mine rides a 1964 BSA trials B40. It is on a daylight only MOT so has no lights and a squeezy bulb horn, the numberplate is a totally illegal 1/2" strip of blackboard paint on the rear mudguard with the number tip-exed in. He was pulled by the police one time, as soon as he stopped the copper said "Oh, sorry pal, I didn't see the numberplate, we thought you were on a stolen trail bike. Carry on.".

I went to get a replacement number plate from halfords today. The buggers only do normal sized ones, infact, seems slightly bigger than normal. And I'm trying to buy a slightly smaller one at the momento to get my bloody exhausts to fit on both sides. Thumbs Down

Those stick on house numbers they sell at most hardware shops are the same font as a numberplate (Arial Bold, use an I instead of a 1). They come in a variety of sizes.

A lorry/trailer numberplate cut in half makes a 'reasonable' sized bike plate.

ive got a small plate on the zxr at the moment, its not taking the piss small, only about an inch smaller, i also have a standard plate but i dont have the bracket to attach it.

the smallest plate ive seen was about the size of a milky way choco bar, bloody tiny.
When plates go that small its asking for trouble as the cops will most likely want to look for other 'non road legal' items.

on the subject of number-plates, is it legal to have a motorbike sized one on the rear of a car?

Hinged number plate going to the choke... I know someone that used to do that. Well, I say know, he was an old friend brother. Never got done for speeding, but eventually got caught.. no idea what happened to him though.

What do you think *Would* happen if you got caught for that?

On the way to Elvington a while ago I saw a ducati that had it's play between the cans and the rear fairing - where the rear reflector is on them and about the same size!

One way to put it, and, I hope he doesnt get away with it for much longer.

Especially, as his bike wont be insured, nor taxed. Nor will he legally own it.

Of course, all of the above can be checked against the V5 and the VIN, but an over zelous copper aint gonna take that into account, is he?

Hope he gets his bike crushed tbh! Police

The bike will be insured, taxed and he will own it.

The possible defence is to say you never noticed it was made up wrong.

I believe they would probably do you for forgery/ perverting the course of justice.

When you sell a bike/car on ebay you can fill in reg details and most of the info comes up. Just out of interest I changed one number.

Not that I'd be capable of doing 180 through a camera, but if I change one number on the plate it comes up as a turquoise Volvo. Don't think that would cause too much concern for the Volvo owner as the picture would obviously mean the real owner of the reg number is innocent.

When it comes to getting busted for having the wrong reg, would "Sorry officer, I never knew. I'll get a new plate immediately" stand? Don't they have to prove guilt? How can they prove that you did knowingly do it.

I used to work in a garage and a fitter there put the wrong plate on a car once. It came back months later and the error was only noticed then.

Im sure the insurance company would argue the toss as the bike aint road legal, or atleast has a case of confused Identity.

For an example, if he got pulled for stealing the coppers will look over the bike because most coppers are a pain in the arse. They will compare his license photograph with his actual face, then they will compare the tax disc against the reg. With the bike having the wrong reg on it chances are that they will get very interested in the riders actions.

Get a fixed penalty notice at the least, where as he could have talked himself out of it.

Then he could also have to stand in court on charges of the origional office he was pulled for; speeding. As well as fraud, diseption, perverting the course of justice (he tried to cover the bikes origional identity) and forgery.

Would be an interesting day for anyone that had to stand in court answering such charges.

I think I saw the bike at the UGP myself, the plate was tiny, you get quite a few credit card size plates in ROI, mines as small as i would chance I think its 8x4.
A mate of mine uses a plate with one digit wrong, he had a 3 made into a 8 using the two black screws, the thing is his "new" plate is that of an old ford transit he saw in a scrapyard, so no other bike will get done for his speeding.

I rode round for around six months with no number plate. I had a scuffed fairing, when I finally got pulled, I got away with it by saying I had dropped the bike and never noticed the number plate had 'broken' off.

Would probably work if you said you hadn't noticed the cheap plastic bolts that you use to hold them on had broken.

I think 'plod' is quite wise to this tactic, since they see it day in and day out on cagers who try to 'personalize' their number plates. However, I think if they tapped the reg into the computer and it came up with scrapped Transit, then they would start thinking something like "what if that '8' was a '3', or that 'L' is an 'I' with a bit tagged on the bottom, or what if that 'H' is a couple of 'I's with a black screw in the middle".

What they could then do is tap the various combinations into the computer. If they manage to turn this scrapped Transit into a road legal bike, there's a strong possibility of getting a knock on your front door, and if the bikes outside with a plate strongly resembling the photograph...

Nuff said Rolling Eyes

Mind you, I'm not sure whether or not our kindly law enforcement officers would deem it time-worthy to persue the matter. On the other hand, it seems there's no lengths they WONT go to these days to make sure they get that scumbag, law-breaking driver/rider Shocked

Food for thought, I suppose.

working in insurance i can answer one of those questions...

if the policyholder had given us the correct reg plate, then in the event of and accident had been found to have tampered with the plate number (technically we dont have to cover even if the plate is slightly smaller than legal) we can refuse cover. and you can also be proscecuted for fraud. so dont do it

as for tax or ownership, i've no idea
