I got this bike to replace my GPX600R that got trashed by some stupid old person.

I thought it was slower than the GPX cos it's not a sports bike, so accepted it for what it is, a lightweight town bike. Well I'm on the motorway this afternoon doing 100 mph. (Top gear, throttle all the way round) and an xj600 divvy passes me quite quickly!

So now I'm thinking maybe there is something wrong!

I read here: https://www.usedmotorbikeguide.com/usedmotorbikeguide.com/index.html
that it should do 125mph. Yeah right! to be honest I think I'd be too buffeted about at that speed to be comfortable, but nonetheless if it should be capable of that, any suggestions where I should start to look to rectify it.

Not the bike shop for an R1. I'd rather fix this, if it's meant to be a 125mph bike that is.

Hi

Figure I heard was 120mph for the XJ600S (suspect the N is only marginally slower), the older XJ600 was quicker.

To be honest given the performance it sounds almost like it has a 33hp kit in it.

All the best

Keith

What revs is it doing in top gear with the throttle fully open? If it's nowhere near revving out then Kieth's suggestion is probably the case.

Take the carbs off, and look for washers inbetween carbs and engine.

They are certainly a bike that feels sluggish and uninspiring but you should be able to get 120 out of it.

If you can't find any restrictors I would try giving it a good tune-up (valve clearances, new plugs, carb balancing etc.). Might also be worth having a look at the gearing and making sure this is standard.

Thanks all. Some good things to go on there.

I've got a busy week ahead not bike related, but will get round to it soon.

I think it's doing about 8000 revs at 100. Next time I get the opportunity I'll have a look.

Restrictors, nice one. I'll whip the carbs off and see, while I'm giving it a good service.

Thanks again. I'll resurrect this thread when I've done the service. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes me. I'm betting on three weeks!

Hi

Those revs sound a bit high. The Divvy red lines at something like 9500rpm and peak power was claimed at 8500rpm (with a claimed top speed of 200kmh).

All the best

In which case, is your clutch slipping? Definately look at the gearing.

I have a 96 divvy 600 and it redlines at about 10.5-11k rpm.

100mph = about 8.5-9krpm in 6th so doesnt sound too far out.
