Ive got myself a little gadget i would like to install on my GS500 Wink

Basically its for a car and has got a cigarette lighter on its end. Ive now cut this off and there are two wires, which i assumed would be Pos and Neg... so i set one to positive and earth the other... nothing happens, ok. So i earth the other one, and set the other to positive... but nothing happens again?

What am i missing / doing wrong?

the alternative would have been to g oto Maplin, and for a couple of quid, get a cigarette loighter extension cable, which has a socket on one end, and a plug on the other.

Cut the plug off, and wire it to your battery, giving you a lighter socket on your bike.

Mine sits under the seat and is used for charging the phone/gps/iPAQ etc

A better device would be a dedicated 12v accessory plug/receptacle.
This has more robust connectors and will hold better in use.
Not much more expensive than a cigar lighter and it has a cover attached so looks the bollocks too.
I got mine cheap from a friendly local Ducati dealer (GWR Glasgow) but BMW supply too if you got a wad on you.

*WARNING* Make sure that the equipment your using doesn't overload the bike alternator. You should find the electrical current required on the equipment label and the relevant specification for your bike in the handbook or ask a local 'qualified' auto electrician. Who will have no qualms about telling you if he's worth his salt? Wink

I've got a little gismo that plugs into the same lead as my optimate charger does, and that gives me a 12v ciggarette lighter, only use it to charge the phone whilst i'm moving, wouldn't want to put a serious load on it.
