Ok, as some of you know, I came home from Snetterton on the back of a recovery truck because the XJ wouldn't start.

Turned out once I tightened the head bolts, it started and ran quite well. With more power than last time.

So that was lack of compression.

When I went to start it this morning, it refused to go. My dad played with it while I was at work and found a loose nut on the cam sprocket. Fine, tightened that. Put it all back together.

It kind of started. But would only run at tickover, and the moment you touched the throttle it would die instantly.

I put on another set of carbs I had laying around and it wouldn't do anything with those ones.

The baffling thing is, the middle two cylinders aren't firing!

Those are fed by both coils, so it's not a naff coil. That was my first instinct. I need to test to see if it'll start with the new carbs in the morning. I lost patience and enthusiasm. And the battery died from turning it over.

Any suggestions much appreciated. I would think it was carb related, but changing the carbs didn't particularly help, knowing that both carbs are relatively new, and I have had the bike running in the past few weeks on both sets of carbs.

Hi

Odd one. Normally I would say coil, but you have dismissed that already. Also adjoining cylinders I would suggest blown head gasket between those cylinders but on your bike the cam chain tunnel is there so counts that out.

Nothing obvious so I would say time to go through everything from the valve clearances, plugs, fuel, etc.

All the best

Keith

Leaving it overnight seemed to do the trick.

Fired up just fine this morning.

Only problem left now is a slightly erratic tickover, that I can live with!
