With all these parking attendants about, I was wondering the legal aspect of having a fake plate made up and swapping it over for when I'm parked. If it was legal size and all, then surely no police would do a 'random' check? And if they did, what's the worst they could do?

And if I got ticketed, they couldn't chase me (if I did accidently duplicate someone elses plate, it's easy enough for them to dispute it), as they've not got my details. Sinse having a third tax disc stolen, I don't keep it on the bike.

Thoughts? Comments? Smile

Traffic Wardens and Parking attendants are supposed to take the registration off of the tax disk, if they realise that the registration on the tax doesn't match, you could end up in a load more sh*t than a parking ticket.

They see your bike illegally parked, and issue a ticket to someone living across the other side of the country. The keeper of the real plated vehicle say 'I'm not paying it, I didn't park there'. They realise that the vehicle with the real plate isn't even a bike, and start hunting for the bike with the fake plate on. If you then get caught with the fake plate, you're in for the high jump.

At least that's the way I see it, anyway.

Wearing a false plate is a customs and excise offence. Biiiiiig trouble if you get caught.

Exactly!

I remember a few years ago seeing an anti theft number plate things. You basically remove a piece of your number plate (like a jigsaw puzzle) so part is missing, then if its spotted like that while driving, the police know that either A) your forgot to put it back on before you left home, or B) Someone has just nicked your car!.

Good idea, never caught on tho!

Even if your car / bike is taxed, you can still be fined upto £1000 for not displaying it. Sad

I'd look at nabbing a plate from a bike that's now a race bike or similar (but not mine Razz ).

Personally, I wouldn't risk it if a police man did see you, you could be in big trouble.

I don't have a tax disc on my bike (keep it under the seat) because it keeps being stolen! Probably quite a few bikes round here with my tax disc! Evil or Very Mad

I'd swap the plates round when I went driving again, as there's *alot* higher chance of having your plate checked whilst driving.

Very tempting. All I need is a plate that is hinged so I can put it under my seat...

Why would people steal your tax disc? Surely it has your bike plate on it and it's no use to them? Or am I being stupid and naive here? Thinking

They are coloured so cops can easily spot if a vehicle's tax has run out from a distance.

Thus people have been known to nab 'em to avoid being stopped after a quick glance.

I wondered that quite a few times. Not sure where the first two got nicked from, as I didn't notice until (I'd guess) a few days later. Third one I had an 'Anti-temper' tax disc holder, at which point they stole the tax disc holder. That was stolen from the car park I work in.

Might just be someone doing it to annoy me.

It's a while since i did it (my own tax disc not a nicked one) but to cash a disc in you need to fill in a form and send it off then they send you a cheque back. I think they would get very suspicious though if the address on the form was different to the registered keepers one on the V5.
