Bikers are worse than chavs

Aug 19 2005

By Evening Gazette

Motorcyclists are worse than hoodie-wearing chavs according to the UK's biggest chain of petrol stations.

An investigation by MCN has found that BP treats bikers worse than the youths, banned from shopping malls and public areas, who hide behind hoods and baseball caps.

The double standards are official policy guidelines for BP. The firm demands we remove our lids before a fuel pump is switched on. BP reckons the policy is in place so staff can check the customer's age - you need to be over 16 to buy petrol. The fact that you need to be over 16 to ride even a 50cc scooter on the road seems to make no difference.

And it seems supermarket chain Morrisons is following BP's example. Like BP, they have no policy against hooded tops, yet openly promote a discriminatory policy against riders.

A Morrisons spokesman said: "While bikers must remove helmets before entering the petrol station there is no policy for baseball caps or hoodies."

The BMF's Richard Olliffe says: "Riders are being treated worse than chavs. Petrol stations lose £5 million each year in people driving away without paying for fuel, but it's more likely to be people in cars with hoodies and caps."

I'm so proud. Laughing

that being said... most BP staff I've dealt with seem to take the company policy with a healthy dose of common sense, and I've never been asked to remove my lid yet.

I'm sure there are a fair number of jobsworths out there who will stick to the lettter tho.

It happened to me and Cath a couple of years ago at the local BP. We'd been there loads of times before with no problem then one morning pulled up as normal put nozzle into tank and they wouldn't turn it on. They then gesticulated that we should turn round so they could check our plates,so we pissed off and never went back again.

*thud*

I only go to two petrol stations round here, they all know who I am, so it doesn't matter if I have my lid on or not.

Very Happy

I had that in a Tesco station once. Got to the counter with the correct money in hand and the snotty old bitch behind the counter refused to serve me in an incredibly pompous way and then swivelled around in her chair in looked out of the window ignoring me.

Unfortunately for her the correct money in my hand was about £10 in silver, so I slapped it down and sprayed it everywhere behind the counter.

If she had asked nicely I would have taken it off.

the worrying thing here is why you have that picture in your possesion?

as for helmet wearing thugs, I just think there being nobs. Having said that they should use disgression, If the garage has been done over often you can understand it.

Get this alot around here, a mate found a good way around it.
He filled up, went to pay, they asked him to remove his lid, he refused and just said " Are you going to let me pay or can I have the petrol for free???", it didnt take them long to take his money, odd they havent asked him again! Razz

I personally don't have a problem with taking my helmet off.
But there are robberies that take place where the robber is wearing a helmet (see link below for surveillance pics);

I have been riding bikes on and off for about 18 years and most of that time there has been notices asking for helmets to be removed. And I consider it good manners to do so. I think people wingeing about this sort of thing is complaining for complaining's sake. Consider what it's like working in a Bank, Shop or Filling station, talking to muffled voices and not being able to see the person's face.
You wouldn't get served if you were wearing a balaclava..

If they had let me fill up with my helmet on, but then refused to serve me until I had taken my helmet off, I'd make a point of going up to the counter with the cash/card offering it, and if they didn't take it I'd drive off.

Fuck 'em. You tried Middle Finger
