Hi, i'm new to the bike scene and this forum, hoping you guys can help. I've just bought a Honda NSR 125r (2000) italian import, that wont start everytime and when it does it doesn run for long.

When it doesnt start:
Choke out/in (tried both),
in neutral,
kick stand down,
clutch down,
emergency cut off is off,
key is on,
Fuel tap on,
new spark plug,
2 stroke oil level max,
starter relay clicks.... but the engine does not turn over like the starter has not engaged properly, (different sound from when you have a low battery)

When it does start:
idles for about a min,
try revving or taking off in 1st it dies, (different from stalling though, as if the power from the battery was cut)

Tried bump starting it, but nothing... Tried connecting the two large terminals on the relay block and the starter motor turns, but doesnt engage to turn the engine.

Someone please help

Thanks, Sav

Your starter motor could be on the way out, which would be one problem.

The other problem once you have got it started sounds like a fuel not getting through problem. Check you fuel lines. If you remove the tap from the tank you check that the mesh filter is clean. While you’re at it you might want drain the fuel tank (if the bikes been stood before you bought it the fuel might be stale.). Replace the tap, and then put fresh petrol in. While your there make sure that when you put the tank down the fuel line is not kinking at all, Then try again.

Failing that, remove your air box (might as well clean your filter while your there. Petrol to clean then soak in SAE 80-90 gear oil squeeze out the excess and replace) and get to the carb.

If it's been stood for ages, or run on reserve, there is chance that shit could have clogged your jets up, or water could be in the carb. I would remove your float bowl (big bolt on the bottom) and blow through the jets with compressed air. Then get some carb cleaner, and give everything a good wipe down.

Put it all together and then try again.

Just remember that apart from the carb cleaner this is all free, so do this first before taking the bike to the garage.

Hope this helps. But if not try PMing one of the more knowledgeable people on this subject such as kickstart.
Thumbs Up

Hi ya mate, im fine around cars, but im completely new to bikes...

Already ordered a new starter Wink

Clean fuel, checked the mesh bit, its cool. no kink

Air box:
(how does the air get to the carb if air box is closed all around?)

"Petrol to clean then soak in SAE 80-90 gear oil squeeze out the excess and replace) and get to the carb."
Whats SAE 80-90? is it special oil for bike transmission?

Carb:
im yet to take off, wil do soon.

As far as taking it to a garage, im on a low budget so i gotta do it all...

Is there anything else you recomend i should check or change/do?

Like re greasing the chain etc etc?

Although it looks sealed, the air box has an inlet on the underside somewhere (cant remember exactly where) you'll see it if you take the box off though. Thumbs Up

Not sure hold old your bike is but this is for the older type NSR125.
The important stuff seems to be the same though.

https://www.geneva-racing.com/~alains/NSRmanualDOC.zip

Air box does have an inlet it's just not very visible from the outside

"SAE 80-90" is straight from the manual that came with my bike. It's simply 2 Stroke (2T) gearbox oil (e.g.. Silkolene light gear oil).

On the chain, Yes I'd clean your chain and lubricate again at least every 500 mile or whenever it looks dirty / dry (whichever comes first). The oil is good at lubricating it, but when it gets grit / dirt mixed with it you get a grinding past which can actually cause more wear than a dry chain. I usually use some petrol / paraffin and a nail brush with farly long bristles to clean out the chain. Then re-lubricate with gearbox oil again, followed by some wax / thick chain lube to stop it flinging out with the centrifugal force.

I'm sure there was a very good post a while back relating to all things chain which was very informative. Anybody got an url?

You will find you have to spend a lot more time and effort on the upkeep of the bike than you first thought. A lot of people think you can buy a bike and just run it like a car but thats not the case. These machines (yes even a little 125 like mine) need constant care and preventative maintainance. the only thing wrong with your starter motor is worn brushes which would cost around £10 to replace.

On the import i believe the airbox intake is on top of the box facing backwards

cheers guys, its a late 99' NSR125r (foxeye). To be honest im not even sure how to remove the chain? or where the gearbox oil drainage plug is??

2t-Screamer - where would i buy starter bushes from?

Now it gets even stranger, the engine turns so the starter started to engage again, but the thing wont ignite. i check for spark, changed the plug, checked for fuel... what else is there? Sad

As far as maintenance, i bough this bike as a project, so i dont mind working on it all the time, just as long as it runs lol.

Could be a faulty HT-lead. I had a problem a while back when the engine was turning over but was not firing up, so i just took out the ht lead and replaced it aswell as the spark plug cap, and now it's fine.
