Really sorry for the pun Embarassed

Well I got another nail in my tyre yesterday which wouldn't normally be a problem, but... it is about an inch away from an existing plug that I have in from a nail a couple of months ago (too much filtering or what!!)

Soooo, is it likely that it will be possible to have another plug so close to an existing one, or will that result in a tyre that is weakened and not worth the risk?

It is going into the garage tomorrow anyway, but I want to prepare myself in case I get a bill for a new tyre!

Another quick question while you're here: How long should it take a decent mechanic to fit new caliper dust seals?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Stick an inner tube in it Thumbs Up

As for the dust seals (presuming you mean all the seals and not just the rubber boot that some are fitted with). Depends on how manky your callipers are, how many pots they have and if they have to dismantle them themself.

I would say an hour tops for a reasonably clean two-pot calliper presented to you off the bike, that is assuming they are fiddly little buggers. Last time I did the GPZ ones it took me about two hours but there was a lot of corrosion and I didn't know what I was doing. I would be quicker next time.

I didn't know they could do that, I though that tubeless tyres had to be tubeless. Ah well he's one of the good guy mechanics, so if he can do that I'm sure he will. Should save a few £££'s.

The calliper will be on the bike, but is dead easy to get to on the GS (it's the front one), and is pretty much spotless since I gave it a good cleaning the other day and made sure the pistons were moving in 'n' out smoothly. Ah well, an hours labour for that isn't too bad. Most things I would try myself, but that's just a little too fiddly for my liking!

Touch wood I won't be breaking a £100 then. Confused Very Happy

I used to run MEZ1s in my supermoto, they are tubeless tyres but on spoked wheels you have to use a tube.

Also used to run tubes in my 350 powervalve because the rims were too knackered to seal the bead.

I know a few other people who run tubes in multiply punctured tubeless tyres when cost is an issue.

Downsides are: It will tend to make the tyre heat up more quickly which isn't really going to be an issue unless you are pushing it to the limits of the speed rating. It could potentially make the tyre blister if it got too hot but I can't see it happening during road riding

It increases unsprung weight, which you aren't going to notice unless you are on a racetrack.

Brakes will take longer if they are on the bike because they will have to drain down the brake fluid, dismantle the calliper then reassemble and bleed them through. I was saying up to an hour if you walked in with the calliper in your hand. Probably a couple of hours if it is on the bike.

Well once again, I have to post about how pleased I am with the garage I use in Cramlington to get my bike reapaired.

He removed, stripped and cleaned the front calliper and fitted new seals (both sets) - the brakes work a treat now!

Fitted new fork dust seals (sounds easy, but it was a mess in there which is why I didn't want to do it!)

Fixed two(!) punctures in my rear tyre (further apart from the last one than I thought, so he managed to plug them).

Got the bike MOT ready (basically a mini-service).

All done for £75, and all done the same day as I dropped it off.

If anyone in the North-East is looking for a decent garage, I would like to recommend Cramlington Motorcycles (01670)717730. He's a really nice bloke as well (I know it shouldn't, but it always surprises me when mechanics are well spoken Wink )
