Hi

Would anybody on here going to Leicester University this year or anyone that is already there like to start a motorcycle society? As a society we would go to rally's and events in the summer, organise a regular weekly ride out for those members with bikes, hopefully arrange some discounts with local dealers, equipment shops and training centres and loads of other stuff! It would be a great way to meet some like minded people and have a load of fun at Uni! You wouldn't even need to have a bike to join (although you'd probably benefit more) as you could ride pillion to events etc.

If anyone on here is at all interested just reply to this thread, or you can email me at 98jack_mo@saffronwalden.essex.sch.uk

Cheers! Very Happy

The club here in Loughborough is one of the oldest in the union (about 30years old now I think). We do pretty much everything you say, as well as going to Germany in July and getting drunk every tuesday!! Another good uni MCC is Bath - their website is full of some pretty crazy stuff!!

Good luck starting it up though. Do you have a freshers bazaar in september? Best time to get new members.

Yeah I've read about the Bath MCC and one in Southampton, they gave me the inspiration to want to start one, didn't know you had one in Loughborough. Yeah there is a freshers fair but I need to get five people to sign up and to write a constitution before the Uni will recognise it as a society and to get a stall at Freshers fair. I'm actually starting at the Uni this year and so am just having ago at finding people that are interested. Loughborough is really close to Leicester, are there any decent local rally's etc? Also it would be cool maybe to hold a rally run by the two societies, if the Leicester society gets off the ground.

Man- that's great news, both Bath and L'boro are my firm and insurance choices this autumn, so i reckon i'll be getting a good deal in terms of a biking fraternity. Any guys at either Bath or L'boro, let me know what's up because i'd either be joining either of your unis next year to do a Meng in Auto eng/Mech eng.

Just a quick word of caution. If you are intending for your society to be an MCC, you need to be aware of the existing protocol between MCC and MC patch clubs or you could land yourselves in some trouble.

Although this site is American, https://home.earthlink.net/~rcvsmc-edu/index.html it gives some interesting information about how these things "work", and it's not so different over here.

If you are not prepared to go down the formal club protocol route, I would strongly suggest that you don't include the MCC in your name.

1) I don't think there is a society at Manchester Met, there are actually very few Uni Motorcycle societies.

2) Thank you for that link mate, at the moment I am not entirely sure if our protocol as a society would be as strict as that, after all we will be uni students and our study will be our main focus. However I do want to create a club that is respected by ordinary people and to promote a positive image of biking in the university and in Leicester as a whole. I would want people who are dedicated to the society and a probationary system membership system would be a good way to do this.

Come on you Leicester Uni people I know your out there!

I'm at Bath (not Bath Spa by the way) at the moment, in my first year, and in the motorcycle club. It's a good club, we go out every thursday for a 'bean' and find a pub somewhere to drink, then ride about a bit, then back, also trips up to the NEC and the other week we went ice karting which was awesome.

If you want any advice or anything about Bath uni, the city, where to stay or whatever then PM me, I'd be happy to help.

Ok I'm doing a final call for anyone on here who is going to Leicester University this year to come along and join the Motorcycle Club. Me and proximity are going to be there at Freshers fair so make sure you drop by and sign up!

Just in answer to the question about De Montfort. I would rather keep the membership just to Leiceter students as this would make things like socials and meetings more simple. However why not find some like minded people and start a society yourself! Very Happy

Hi,

I am currently studying at Leicester University. I will be in my 3rd year this september, and TBH, i haven't seen many bikes around on campus. According to the Student's Union Webpage, you need at least 25 supporters in order to receive funding. If you need help in that regard, i would be happy to put my name down for membership.

Here is an excerpt from the relevent webpage:
Quote:

What Makes a Society?
In order for a new society to come into being it must satisfy the following requirements:
The proposed area of activity of a new society must not be already be provided for by existing clubs, societies or associations.
It must have a written Constitution and Code of Practice. These documents set out how the society will be run, who the officers will be and how they will be elected. Both the Constitution and the Code of Practice must be based on the Union's model documents, and must be passed by the members of the group and then submitted to the Students' Union Executive Committee for approval. To find out more about how to write a constitution and Code of Practice, click here...
These are the basic requirements for a society to be affiliated to the Union. However, most societies require funding from the Union in order to support the activities they provide.

In order to be entitled to funding from the Union a group must satisfy the following requirements
The group must have met all the requirements to be affiliated to the Union.
The group must charge a membership fee to all members. The minimum membership fee is currently £1.50, but groups are free to charge more if they wish. The membership fee should be used to provide services and activities for the members of the group.
The group must have a minimum of 25 full members. These must all be students of the University. Other people may be members of the group but they may not be full members and do not count towards the 25 members necessary.
The Treasurer of the group must attend finance training before any monies will be released.

Oh, and if you intend to ride your bike to school, you need to register your bike at the Security Office. After registration, you will be allowed to ride into school, though you are not allowed to take up a parking space. This is not a problem as you are allowed to park at the Bicycle locking areas.

That lot sounds like a complete carry-on.

I am one of the loose group of hangers-on that forms the Edinburgh University MCC. We are no longer an official University club due to lack of student members, this makes no difference whatsoever and there is nothing they can do to stop us calling ourselves that as most of the members are graduates of said university.

Just start your own club, decide when and where to meet and recruit members by flyering bikes parked near the university. Once you have enough, have a meeting and elect a president, secretary and treasurer. The rest will follow on in a natural prosression depending on how much you can be arsed.

The EUMCC is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) motorcycle societies in Edinburgh. We have minutes dating back to 1968 (although I suspect the club pre-dates this) and peaked at 140 members in the 1970's when the club owned its own, fully equipped workshop.

Anyone in Edinburgh is quite welcome to join in if they are interested (you join by going along, nothing formal). Usually meet on a tuesday night at either the Blind Beggar, The Plesance or The Southdsider. I can put you in touch with someone who will know which if you are interested. We always have a summer run (Shetland this year) other runs are organised through the year as and when people feel like it. Be prepared for a load of boring old farts on Brit Iron though Wink
