Had an interesting altercation with the Cashier at Esso in Totton this evening. I fill up there at least once a week, and almost always pay by card.

Pulled up, Filled Up, Walked in to pay.

Me: "Number 11 Please." *Hands over SOLO card*
Him: "Sorry Sir, Don't accept solo"
Me: (laughing) "Yea you do. I paid here last week with solo."
Him: "Havn't accepted solo since June"

I know this is untrue. I've been told nothing about this whenever I've paid before, and there are no signs at the station saying anything about this (unlike the station just down the road, with a sign on every pump saying "Solo not accepted").

Me: "Well I paid here last week with Solo"
Him: "You may have paid here last week with Solo sir, but you shouldn't have. In fact, I've seen you before havn't I, and told you then? We don't accept solo"
Me: "I've never seen you before in my life."
Him: "No, I've told you before. I'll try the card in the machine"
He fiddles with the machine.
Him: "Sorry, Card's been declined. Cash Please"

I know full well my card has ample funds on it - I checked before I left the house.

Me: "Stop fucking around. I don't have any cash"
Him: "Well I'll have to call the police then"
Me: "Go Ahead"
Him: "Oh well uh... I'm only doing this as a favour. Sign here"

*I sign the recipt*

Him: "There's your recipt. Don't come back here again"

So it seems they do accept solo

Now, I didn't do *anything* to agrovate this guy - yet he seemed to make it his mission to make paying difficult for me. The only thing that could have pissed him off was my wearing of a helmet...?

Seriously though... why did he even bother! Gah I'm pissed off.

Solo was basically the kiddie's version of switch, I know my switch card was replaced by maestro, maybe it's worth asking your bank for an upgrade.

I take my helmet off as i'm walking towards the tills to pay, it usually doesn't take any longer and I would like to think I'm being slightly considerate.

I've been informed that you can use SOLO anywhere that accepts Maestro from the beginning of December..

I'd seriously think of writing a complaint to the manager of the petrol station and maybe to the Esso head office (although the station is very likely a franchise).

The Shell garage near me no longer accepts cheques, so I have to wait until payday to fill up the car, instead of 2 days before!

He might have had you mistaken on account of you keeping your helmet on. On the other hand it might be so that unauthorised people cant use your SOLO card (say it was stolen) they can see where and when it was used and get cctv footage....but then he would have asked you to remove your helmet....strange. Maybe he's just a cock and has a grudge against bikers cus we're cooler than him

I've had it like Vespa, ran out of fuel pushed my bike into the petrol station and filled up, realised I had no money on me.

He trusted me enough to not take any details! I went in and paid when I went passed next day.

Some of the feckers seem to not bother changing their prices on the signs outside too. I was initially quite pleased to find petrol still at 89.9, but it was 91.9 at the pump.
