I've only had a scooter in the winter & it can't get more depressing back end out hands freeze dark can't go that fast etc,

I expect this is what it's like a sportsbike, Do you ride if you don't have to or is this when most people sell there bikes, my point here is i will be doing a test this next week & want to know if i should wait until feb time.

Sry for the weird question peeps.

Chris. Thumbs Up

I've only been riding through one winter, but I found there were a few days when I could get up really early on a cold, clear morning and have a fantastic ride. I'd be one of the few people on the road, there would be those low patches of mist which hang around at less then a couple of feet high in fields and look really atmospheric, and when you stop for a coffee it would feel like the best thing ever. Smile

I'd much prefer to be on a scooter than a sportsbike in the winter. The less power you've got, the less you tend to slip and slide, and they're easier to jump off if things go wrong. Smile

Anyway, I'll be wearing my big red metal jacket all winter. Save the bike for the crisp and sunny days. Cool

I will be driving my nice new Peugeot 307 180 to Work cos its got a heater. and traction controll.
on a nice crisp Sunday morning however theres nothing better than a blast on a bike to wake you up. you just have to make sure the tyres get warm before you try to get your knee down.the first time i rode my blade in the winter i bottled it big time and rode everywhere at 30 mph dosent take long to find how much grip you have.

I'll be riding my gixxer all winter as usual. You bunch of wussies!! Razz

Put it this way... if you spend 6 or 8 months riding through shitty winter weather, controlling slide after slide, catching the front end, etc, etc... when you get back to the summer with the warm dry roads, and sticky tyres... how much of a better summer rider will you be!? and how much more control and ability will you have with your bike!

Seriously, the best riders I know all ride through the winter. The "summer only" riders just aren't a patch on them! Wink

I thought it was winter, since July at least. (Except for the odd day)

i got my bike last winter, and riding with snow and ice made me a better rider as i had to concentrate so hard

driving rain you cant see through with a visor on, has no benefits though. That is the worst one for me.

I get my 125 in November, on my Birthday, right as winter starts to get to its cruelest.

Same thing with my ped, got it in November, had to endure the winter.

Not a good start to the hobby, but I don't mind it too much. My jacket and gloves have always kept me nice and warm even in December and January. Just wish it didn't go dark so early..

Still ride it anyway, all that ice makes it more exciting - can play speedway down random backlanes Laughing

All I can say if you are going to ride in winter, the harshest of seasons, is to take care of yourselves. Don't want any of you becoming a statistic.

I will be out riding most probably on my bike, it has nobbly tires so it more adapted than a sportsbike.

Take it easy Thumbs Up Smile

I'm with Suzuki, I bought the teapot specifically as a commuting vehicle, so will be riding it come rain or shine through the winter.
I figure having just passed my DAS I need to get as much practice as possible, so hopefully by next summer I should be a much better rider.

in the sense of getting faster and being a better rider i don't think riding in winter will do shit, except maybe better balance. it won't make you quicker as you go slower all the time, or take corners faster.

I'm thinking of investing in a heated waistcoat this winter, after using heated grips last winter I've got the impression heated stuff is definitely the way forward.

I haven't passed my car test yet, so I have to ride the FZR in ALL weathers, daily.

I really don't mind the bitter cold, downpours, windy days, what I despise is ice Shocked Mad
You can't escape it, and if you end up on top of it, you are off.

I don't even WANT a car..never did, but I do the school run on the bike now, and felt that I had to ensure the safety of my child somewhat when the weather turns nasty.

I wish I could pay for a fake car licence now Confused
I am such a slow car learner.

The advantage with winter riding is, you develope a better understanding of your bike and not just in a riding sense. I learnt a lot about how to maintain my bike, when it needed to be cleaned and scrubbed everyday. When it comes to riding, you soon get bored of doing 20mph and want to go around bends quicker, at which point you realise that even in the worst weather, your bike can handle the weather a lot better than you think.

Tanks Jon! Razz

I shall again be riding all winter, sliding everywhere and freezing my ass off. Bike started squirming this morning because the tyres wouldn't warm up, let the fun begin. Neutral

Riding in winter doesn't keep you sharp, you still have to warm up again in spring btu as Jon said, you kind of get used to having little slides so you don't panic much when you get them in summer.

Winter riding taught me an awful lot. Learning how to control a rear end slide on the throttle was really quite fun, and even though front end slides were mostly monkey legsTM moments, I didn't drop any, and I finally learnt my lesson to leave the front brake well alone.

The roads between November and February or so last winter were constantly caked in a rather horrible greasy, black mud, keeping a bike clean was an impossibility and many a slide was had. Is it usually like that every winter? Confused

Where can you get a heated waistcoat? Didn't know they existed.

Will be riding all winter, sounds useful.
