Insurance? How much and where?

Im thinking of getting the son, something along the lines of the derbi GPR 50!

Something quite cheap for a first.

Insurance quotes seem to be dear! Any one with any ideas?

Thanks in advance! Thumbs Up

On my Derbi Senda, from Motorcycle Direct, Third party only, 135 Quid. Which I thought was very reasonable.

I paid £500ish TPO on my old Derbi Senda 50 (a supermoto with the same engine as the GPR) at 16. A lot of it depends on where you live and the such.

Was well worth it for the fun I had on the bike, worth every penny. Very Happy

If its your son's first bike, make sure you dont get an expensive one as chances are it'll only be dropped at some stage.

Pretty much all of them use the same minarelli engine, most of it will be down to preference. When i was after a geared 50, the most sensible thing i could have done was get a clapped out one and a haynes manual, and done one up myself - at least then i'll know it's in good condition, and it'd probably only cost the same as finding one in good condition

How about adding it to your insurance and putting him down as a rider?
would of thought if you are able to do that then it would be cheaper

I got mine insured for £301 I think, my area isn't exactly good but it's secure. You should try www.4counties.co.uk I think it is, they ring round and find the best price for you.

Thanks for all the response. I will look into insuring him under me and also the various insurance companies for him himself.

The main reason for me looking at GPR50 is I can get a 2002 for a few hundred quid, needs a bit of work, but he aint 16 til end of October. Dont want to spend too much cos like someone has said it will get dropped, with it being his first bike!

Thankyou, all! Thumbs Up

Another vote for the senda, i dropped mine twice wheeling it out the garage but it never even got scratched, and it never gave me any trouble, insurance was about £450 tpft on it.

Few people on here have had Derbi's, think most will agree they are good solid bikes, very small difference between all of the 50cc's anyway.

The gpr has a dummy tank on it which you can fit a helmet in, meaning great practicality, but the hinge tends to bause a bit of stress on the dummy tank. If you can get the 02 model cheap, then go for it. Having to fix it up will also help in the event of it breaking down (though the minarelli engine is pretty much bullet proof from what i've heard).

yzf750r, give the insurance company 'lexham' (i think thats how you spell it) a call. They specialise in low CC bikes for young people. They often give really good prices!

Give them a call, and i'll bet they will be one of the lowest, or the lowest!

Keep shopping around for insurance prices, as you will find one for around the £300 mark.

Failing that just get him insured under you as the main rider, because i am guessing you are an experienced rider with many years NCB.

It might be an option to have him as a named rider and just insure the bike in your name, but this won't give him the chance to build up a history of no claims, meaning if he does move onto a 125 then you're going to be no better off than you are now.
