i know insurance companys try to get out of paying as much as posible, so do you just have to tell them if theres a colour change or engine tuning? what about things like twin headlights?

If it's not standard then you should tell them, most of the time they don't care unless it's a tuning or performance modification. The worst that's likely to happen if you tell them is a couple more quid on the premium, if you don't tell them then you could end up with no payout at all.

Also if you tell them you have different aftermarket parts then they would be covered if you came off. TBH - I wouldn't tell them every time changed your bar ends though!
