Another option:-

Arrow Contact breakers (or use Partsearch) or eBay and get another engine for less than the repair. Ok, you'll still need to get it fitted (so maybe labour costs if not DIY) but it is another option.

What's wrong with the buy a manual and have a go yourself approach. Anyone can do it if they follow the manual and just post pics up on here of the damage so others can advise you what to do. You can't break it if it's already broke.

If you take the engine out of the frame you can work on it in the house once you've cleaned and degreased everything.

Even if you can't do it all, taking the engine out of the frame and partially stripping it will save some of the pro's time and hence money.

Most people who have learnt how to fix things have had to do it out of neccesity because they were skint.

if it's the TDR, then is shares it's engine with the DT and TZR, so there should be plenty of engines kicking about, even if they need a rebuild/rebore. That will still be easier than reworking what you have.

Note the TZR engine has different gearing from the TDR/DT but the DT and TDR are identical.

A second hand engine looks like the best option then. There is one on ebay on the moment at £51.

I dont have the tools or work space for it and there is no way dad will let me bring an engine in the flat!

Also they said the bottom end needs to be sent away as its pressure sealed or something? If that makes any sence...

almost all 2 strokes are.. nothing major really.

if you decide to scrap it, let me know. I might be interested in it.

Based on the DT/TDR being identical post above then this item on eBay may be of interest.

Unsure of location, if interested suggest you contact seller.

If you were to sell the bike, what sort of figure did you have in mind?

Well a last resort would be to break the bike up and sell the bits but I'd rather not. A new engine is a good idea but is it still gonna take the garage just as long time to fit it back in? I would do it my self but I just dont have the work space Sad

If I got the work done and came to sell it would it make the bike worth more as its gonna have a new top end and re built bottom end? I only need it for my test then I want to get a big bike.

having a working bike isn't going to make it more valuable than say, having a working bike. It might make it easier to sell, but won't make it worth more.

remember tho, if you deciden to break it, you may be left with a whole load of bits you need to dispose of yourself. it's rare that everything gets sold.

As I said.. if you want to get rid of it, let me know as I fancy a 125 project

Using the eBay item above as an example, that's around £240. That leaves £320 from your original quote. At £40/hour that's 8 hours worth of labour to total £560. Now the original labour estimate of 8 hours was also for taking the engine out, stripping and rebuild it and then putting it back in the frame. So just taking an engine out and putting in another one (assuming mounting points match) would be a lot less time (my estimate 3 to 4 hours max. for someone with experience).

As also said selling for spares could get you some money (bikes are worth more from their bits). However, could take time and effort and rely on someone needing your bits and you've already said you haven't a work place. So IMO that would be a non-started for you.

Bad luck mate. You might be able to get some advice over on the forums at www.yamaha-rd.com as a lot of people on there have TDRs, TZRs and so on. Breaking it and selling the parts on Ebay might be an option if you can be bothered, but for all the time you will spend packaging things which only sell for a couple of quid and answering loads of questions you might as well have spent the same time re-building the engine! What condition are the plastics in? If they are alright you could probably get a few quid for them if you did break the bike as I remember that they were quite rare from when I had my TDR. You could probably get a decent engine for not much then just get a garage to fit it, maybe stripping everything yourself to save time and thus labour costs. If not, I assume fitting an engine is easier than re-building, so you might find someone willing to give you a hand or fit it for a few quid?

I'm suprised the garage didn't offer you the option of using a second hand engine. The garage i use visited a breaker for recon parts for my tranny when that went kaput. Buy a second hand engine, or ask the garage to do it and get them to fit it. Just drop your bike off there, then take the engine straight there (no storage probs that way)This is the cheapest option i can think of, just make sure you get the lowest mileage and best condition for age that you can.

Perhaps because they make more money when the person buys a new one? Razz

How much did you buy the bike for in the first place, and how much will you sell it for in good running condition?

If the difference between those 2 is small, I'd say do that. If you think it will be big, ie more than the £3-£400 you could maybe get the work done for, I'd strip it and sell it for parts, or sell it as a non-runner.

Good luck man! The hazard perception confused me a bit at first, but a chat with the guy at the test centre put me straight.
