Hey got a gilera dna 50 and gave it its usual clean last saturday and i though i would clena the air filter why i was at it so took airfilter of and cleaned it with water and fairy up liquid (i know bad!) but i let it dry and put it back in and start the bike up fine. Go to pull away and it wont go over about 5mph! take the air filter out of the box put it on with no filter and runs great??? I dont understand so i take the bowl of the carb cleaned all that and cleaned the jets etc etc. Put it back together and it still dont like the filter, so i try putting in a mates filter n it does same thing? Whats up with it? Should i by a new filter or can i do something elese, carb prob?

Thanks Martin

Chances are the fibres in the filter have matted and so is suffocating the engine of air.

Buy a replacement and let this be a lesson to you!

For later on, clean it with petrol, let it dry naturally and do not wringe! (spelt?)

I read (in a hanyes manual) that you clean air filters with oil Confused (I haven't tried it).

Forgive my ignorance, but it is a oiled foam affair, isn't it? Get a paper filter wet and it's on the fast train to fubardom.

Yes it is foam

The only thing i can think of is that you used too much washing up liquid possibly

I was told to clean with petrol or water (petrol is better), then put a light coating of oil on the top to stop fine dust etc.

I usually miss the oil, as i put too much on last time and it started burning it in the engine

Don't miss on the oil unless you want all those aforementioned small particles wearing out your engine. Thumbs Down
Water would be crap for cleaning. Use petrol or white spirit and make sure it dries after cleaning. Then add 2-stroke oil. I got the excess oil out by placing the filter between some kimwipe and appling some pressure to squeeze it out.
As said above never wring out the filter.
Oh and on my bike if there is too much oil applied it forms a puddle in the bottom of the air box which is not great drama.
