This might seem like a really daft question so I'll apologise in advance Embarassed ... I can find loads of pages that tell you which categories bikes are classified into, but what exactly does each group classification mean? E.g. for a zzr600, I'm looking at group 13 - what does that mean?

It is the Norwich Union insurance group, determined by a number of factors, primarily how expensive it is to repair the vehicle back to new after a head-on collision into a concrete barrier at 15 km/h. (It is that for cars, I'm not sure whether bikes undergo exactly the same test or not).

Other factors include the price of the bike, the capacity, engine power and style (risk of theft). Different factors have differently weighted effects on the group number. The scale for bikes runs from 1 to 17, it is effectively a 'risk of them having to spend money 'rating for your bike.

E.g. if you have a CG125, group 3 or 4, it will cost a few hundred for clocks, wheel, forks and brake for a low speed frontal impact.

For a Ducati with fancy brakes, USD forks, stupendously expensive fairings, posh wheels, screen, radiator etc etc, the insurance group is more like 16+, as it'll cost thousands to repair if it is crashed.

Obviously the Duke will be more likely to be stolen and end up as a total loss. Bikes like the KLR650 cost a hell of a lot more to insure against theft than bikes like the NTV650, simply because they are more likely to be stolen and the insurance company is more likely to have to pay out.

Rest assured, the insurance company have done an awful lot of sums to ensure that they always show healthy profits. Neutral
