For a 19yr old with 1 years no claims

on 98 R1

its £3500.

i was thinking £1500 but that seems an impossible figure to get.
i even offered to pay £1000 excess.

can anyone reccomend any decent places to try. or will i just have to wait 6 years.

Wait and get some more no claims and experience, or run the risk of riding an embarassingly slow 33bhp R1.

£3500 a year? Think of the other bikes you can get for that kind of money.

i wouldn't ride it restricted. its was just an idea that if i could get low enough insurance i could get it earlier than expected. i will have to keep trying but it seems it wont happen untill maybe another year.

Last time I checked you were legally bound to riding a 33bhp bike with your level of experience. It'll be difficult to blag how you came to riding a 150bhp bike, which would invalidate the £3500 insurance in the first place Neutral

Not unless he passed his test when he was 17.

R1_lad has an R1 and is 19/20, I think his insurance is fairly reasonable, may be worth asking him who he's insured with.

If you wait until your 21 the insurance will drop quite a lot, I had a Hayabusa insured TFTP for £1100! So yours will be a little cheaper especially with hopefully three years ncb.

Depends. If the bike is kept garaged in the middle of nowhere then you should get it for less than that, if it'll be kept on the street in central London then it could well be more than that.

Get yourself a copy of Bike Trader, call around all the companies in the back then call back around the cheapest5 ones playing them off against each other until none will go any lower. Yes it'll take ages but the amount of money you should save means it's definately woth doing.

www.cia-insurance.co.uk are generally good for young people, £850 TPFT for a TL1000R when I was 18. Smile

Never volounteer to pay a silly amount for the excess. You can take a £500 volountary excess and it will usually only reduce the premium by £50.

I'd stay on the 400cc for another year personally.

Insurance will be about £300 and you will learn more on a 400cc than on a 150bhp missile launcher.

R1 will cost a lot more.

Alot of it goes on your postcode, but I think with only one years ncb at 19 your gonna be in four figures wherever.
I was 23 when I got a 98 R1, it was under £500 tpft with 3 years ncb.

Probably worth looking at TPO prices - if your bike did get nicked you wouldn't be able to afford to get insured again anyway Confused.

As usual, just ring around /every/ company in the back of biketrader.

It may be only one or two of the 50+ will actually do you a good deal.

I've said it many a time but....

If you buy an R1 now you will not have the fun of buying loads of bikes in between. Very Happy

IMO it is better to learn on a lower power bike for longer than you think. With my old 400 I could really push it and learn progressively but on my bigger bike I go fast enough anywhere without really trying.

Stick with the 400 for a year or so, rack up the no claims bonus/experience mileage. My 2p's worth anywho.

Just thought.

If you buy the R1 you will remember how good your 400 is. Don't think more cc is better necessarily. You will have to drive ALOT faster to get the same thrill you get from the 400.

R1's are nice bikes, but I doubt many companies would like to insure you on a bike that mental. I would hedge a bet that at your age a 600 / 750 is the biggest bike you could have with a "reasonable" cost.

Still if you do get a quote for £1500 or less let me know, I'll put in some overtime Cool

P.S on a bike that big you'll hate it when you get shown up by a green 400 on the twisties Razz Cool Laughing Mr. Green

i'm glad i got into bikes late cos at 29 i have had a rs125 a year and next year i could get a r1 with insurance being £475.

i probably wont but its nice knowing i could. only down side is a fiesta wd cost me £800 to insure. it makes the r1 look like a bargain

mind u i ve just passed my car test but it doesnet mean i'll pass my bike test
