I was reading about counter steering yesterday and while out riding today I thought I'd test it out. I know we all do it, mostly without realizing, but my oh my doesn't it make a difference to your riding when you make a conscious effort to do it? You really can flip flip flip the bike into the twisties Smile

Great innit! Very Happy

I also find that if i need to avoid a manhole cover or something, i can stay sitting upright and counter-steer to swerve the bike incredibly quickly round the obstacle.

Also, i've noticed that on my old NSR, i counter steered by pushing the bar out, but of the VFR, that doesn't really work, and you have to pull on the other bar instead. Anyone else find this difference with different bikes?

Obviously, normal steering is when you lean the bike while the wheels stay in the same position (relative to the road), kind of like a metronome.

Counter steering is when you stay pretty much still (relative to the road), and you use the handlebars to swing the bike underneath you, like a pendulum.

So going into a right hand bend, you pull on the left handlebar, and push on the right. As the front wheel moves left underneath you, the bike naturally falls to the right. When you are at the correct angle to take the corner, you stop pushing on the bars and go round.

Simply put, instead of you leaning to make the bike turn, you make the bike lean, the bike turns itself, and you sit on for the ride!

Just make sure you are doing a decent speed (30+), it doesn't work if you are going too slowly. It can be scary because the bike feels like its going from under you, and also because its much quicker than normal steering. But its also much more fun once you get into it!

Fantastic stuff it is. Not just for cornering either, it's the best kind of control there is in strong cross winds and the like.

I don't recommend trying it out on push bikes though. The wheels aren't fat enough and you'll kill yourself, like I almost did. Mr. Green

you can consciously steer by countersteering, but even if you are not trying, that is the way you actually steer the bike when u lean it.

you may not believe me, but if you bars were locked rigid, you wouldnt be able to steer by leaning as leaning the bike over always requires a slight bit of countersteer even if you arent aware of it

i cant remember the link now but some scientists did experiements on this

I know, but i thought palmer would rather have the
"real riding/feel of it" explanation than the science. Very Happy

cool, so like, you steer the other way to make the bike lean, then you steer normally from there?

turning right - you push the right, bike falls away, then you put weight back on the left and steer normally?

Pretty much. But if you need to adjust your road position mid-corner, or quickly lean from one side to the other (like coming off a roundabout), you can counter steer to do that too.

BTW, for a detailed discussion on how it works, as well as lots of other great tips, you can't do much better than this. It's an American book but if you can swap right for left in your head then the advice holds good.
