Hihi!

I "passed" my CBT saturday, it was great fun.

My biggest problems I felt were a hill start or two and downgearing.

Am I right in thinking you downgear in a "block" shortly before you stop? And for hill starts is it a case of back brake, start pulling off, ease off back brake?

Also, I'm a sod for leaving indicators on... but I guess that will come in time. I'll just have to say "indicating left, indicating left, indicating left" all through a left hander and I'll remember to turn it off!

Feel like a knobber for checking those things, but I'd rather be doing things right Smile

Cheers!

Ben

For normal riding it's fine to block change when down gearing. When you get a bit more experience and start riding fast, especially on a higher powered bike it's best to come down through the gears one by one with a little blip of the throttle in between each one.

If stopping you should try to be in 1st gear before you come to a complete stop.

Your hill start technique sounds ok. Don't be scared to use the revs, usually about 3000rpm.

The indicators are a pain, even more so when you've driven a car for a while but it does come as naturally as changing gear after a few hundred miles.

Cheers SpannerMonkey Smile

Blip of the throttle gets the engine/backwheel going at roughly the same speed so that the rear doesnt lock up, right?

Thanks,

Ben

yes, to get the engine moving so the back wheel doesnt lock up, and personally on a hill start i tent to use my front brake, other wise i feel like i keep switching legs, "get on, put it in first then put that leg back on the floor and bring your other leg up to the rear brake, then go = /" hehe however your tecnique sounds good tbh better then mine proboably Smile Thumbs Up

As you are on this topic, I passed my cbt & we had a hill start, Is it just me or do you need to give the old cg125 alot of throttle on a very steep hill as it sound really loud & i don't know if you do need to give it much more revs Thumbs Up

I got one of the hill-starts spot on. Get to your biting point, put the revs on and ease off the back brake as you feel the bike wanting to move a bit. Yes you do have to rev it more, but in my experience just feel/listen to the bike - not look at the rev counter. Control it with the clutch, smoothly ride it, and you'll be okay. Get some praccy in on an industrial estate - around here they all have up/down hill bits!
