Saw a thing in a magazine a while ago about some Yamaha off road bike (can't remember any more than that)that had front wheel drive as well as the rear through a hub. Would this be a good thing on road bikes aside from obvious weight issues and other technicalities?

There are 4wd cars so why not 2wd bikes?

Yep, apparently they have an R1 with a similar unit being played about with too..

Its pretty significant, it would be safer and (once they have the technology sorted) improve handleing and power delivery in real life situations (shatty excuses for "resurfaced" roads for example)...

If it takes off then suspension will change, linked bmw type affairs or like the bimota tesi (i know others have done it too) and because of that frames will need to be designed differently... so bikes might well look allot different, or there will be allot more variety at least..

the problem that they found with the bike was that on the off road test the bike wouldnt slide into the corners as easily as it should. also wouldnt it make the jumps a bit harder? surly it would make the bike nose dive when the throttle is blipped in mid air?

cheers houlsby

Been tried countless times but its possible the off roader might make it into production as it uses a hydraulic motor vs a cable drive from before, the R1 has been ditched, it never would work well and there is no advantage to it, also added alot of weight and robbed lots of power
