Consider the following statement

'It is dangerous to overtake approaching, or at, a junction'

What do you think agree/disagree?

How about this

'It is dangerous to ovetake approaching, or at, a junction. Especially when there is a car in tat junction with an indicator on waiting to turn the opposite direction to you'

Heres the crack, and I'll try not to let this turn into a rant but it just might, so apologies. About ten minutes ago on the way to the cash point I almost became 'the arsehole that knocked laddo off his bike'. I got t the bottom of my hill and about to pull out onto the A595 turning left. Lights on, indicator on. I look left and then check right is clear too. To the left are 2 cars (a peugeot and a citroen I think) and a BMW motorcycle about 50-60m away. Right is clear so I start to pull out, and look left. Well what is the dickhead doing? he's only overtaking the two cars right at the fooking junction Im pulling out of. Well, jesus christ, I shit them hit the brakes and hammer the horn to show my affection. Its ok though because I easily missed him by at least two feet Shocked

Now this tosser is on the way to the pub tonight to tell his mates how 'some fucking cager' nearly 'pulled out' on him, all in an attempt to hide his embarressment at his own sheer lack of inteligence.

When I did the bikesafe course they showed us pictures of accidents where bikers had been killed and almost all of them involved a biker overtaking at a junction. So wy the fuck did this guy do it, he's on a big BMW so its not likely to be some inexperienced youngster on a CBT. Theres no excuse. it made me make that wish where you wished the car would turn into your bike so you cld chase the twat. Its not as If im a boyracer, Ive got a brand new 1.0 car without even a hint of neons or an Ikea shelf on the back. Thumbs Down

So to the BMW rider in the blue jacket with the white helmet Middle Finger Twisted Evil

To the rest of you, am I wrong?

At least he's down the pub having a pint and not on his way t hospital in a bad state or worse, with his kids and wife waiting at home wondering where he is. What pissed me off is the fact that I would be 'that guy' or 'the stupid cager' that killed someones husband/wife/boyfriend/brother/son/uncle

I've done the same thing but from the point of view of the motorcycle. In fairness the junction was not signposted in any way and just appeared out of the hedge, not visible from the end of the straight where I started the manouver. I was partway through an overtake (alongside the car) when I saw another car coming out of the junction turning towards me.

Threw out the anchor and pulled up with me and the car landing up facing one another about 10 yards apart with me in the wrong lane. Trouble is, there was a big line of traffic behind me so I was left sat stationary in the wrong lane facing a car while they all went past looking at me disapprovingly Embarassed

I was wrong to overtake there.

However. There is also the whole checking both ways and looking in the direction of travel before manouvering out of a junction issue. If the guy in the car had looked to his left, he could not have failed to see me, I was committed top the overtake by the time he appeared on the scene. He didn't, he looked right, saw nothing coming in his lane and made a left turn before looking where he was going.

50:50 fault in my oppinion and chalk one up to riding within my stopping distance.

Different to your case because you were already sat at the junction, the bike should have seen you and stayed put.

We get a similar situation on our road because theres lots of sideroads, the worst ones are the ones that look up the hill and arent even bothered to see if theres anything there and just pull out.

A similar situation to yours stinkwheel lies further down the road. If you are on the way up the busiest junction is on your right. About 10 yards before this junction some arsehole always parks his car so you have no option to go round it, you cant see into the junction for a houseso just have to be careful. at this point you are on the wrong side of the road at a junction through no real fault of your own. All is well until some clown comes to the junction and looks up the hill whilst turning left, without stopping. If they see nothing coming down they turn out without looking left and then start looking left as they are half way out only to get a faceful of you coming the other way.

It's definitely the bikers fault here. On your car test, you'll get an instant fail for not observing both ways, whether turning right or left. You did that and were indicating, so the biker was at fault for both failing to observe your intentions, failing to observe that there was nothing approaching so you were going to pull out, and overtaking at a dangerous point.

The grey area comes in with regard to the biker when you can't observe the junction for your position on an unknown road.

Goes to show that no matter whether you are in a car/bike/bus you always have to treat every other road user as an idiot and act according (not just a bike thing then is it)

I agree, beamerman was in the wrong, but whether they are in a 3series or going the long way round they are all fools Razz

From the posts on this thread, one would be forced to assume that the standard of road design (especially with regard to junctions) in cumbria is totally shite Thinking

Stinkers, this isnt the A595 at large, we are talking about BNFL traffuc passing a junction that is clearly posted andeveryone knows about. Ive just come home from the pub and Im wrecked and STILL pissed off about this. I am the 'WANKER' in this equation.

Stink, I know you are not far from me, how about we ride cumbrias worst roads together and Ill show you where its at. The A595 is the longest most dangerous piece of shit road imaginable, it causes accidents in its spare time. When you say our roads are shite I understand, BUT ive got one in reserve that any biker will love guaranteed! Wink

Agreed.

I see a surprising number of bikes overtaking in filter lanes to turn right and it amazes me. All it takes is a car driver to realise that they missed their turning and swing the car right and the biker would be screwed.

On the same topic, my birds friend crashed his car at a junction. He was behind two cars both turning left so he overtook them, as he did so a car pulled out of the junction and he hit them. Yesterday he got a 12 month ban and a £700 fine Wink
