Was riding back in the night last Wednesday. Decided to put on the old fluorescent waistcoat as some of the street lighting and country lanes can be a bit dodgy. Anyhow, as it's over the bike jacket left it in place for my commute to and from work.

Then what happens, no biker nods at all Sad So either other riders think I'm invisible, pretending to be a copper (unlikely given the black jacket/helmet and old bike) or my choice of attire is beneath contempt so not worth acknowledging.

Oh hum Very Happy

I find that nearly all of the fluorescent brigade are just miserable commuters who don't really get into the spirit of biking and never nod back. So i don't nod to them anymore.

Every time I've ever nodded at someone wearing a vest I've been sternly ignored, treated with contempt like I'm some sort of sportsbike riding hooligan Laughing

So I don't bother nodding unless they do first.

I think people look better as wankers in fluorescent waistcoats then they do as wankers impersonating road kill personally.

No, we're just rude. Very Happy

I don't understand it really - I go riding at the weekend and nod to everybody (I usually nod first... suppose I'm just friendly). Then, come monday on the weekly commute it just doesn't seem to be the thing to do... I sometimes forget and nod anyway, but just get blanked.

That said, I think there's an unwritten rule about bikers not nodding to ped-bois/gals... also don't know why Rolling Eyes

Cos they never nod back?!

Saying that I was nodded at by a scooter the other day, I was too taken aback to be able to react to it. Surprised

On the ped (and I tell you, it was the mother of peds, the most uncool thing ever - but I still made a profit Very Happy ) I used to get the occasional nod. I'd always nod back, but I never nodded first as I didn't want the ones who didn't nod back to have the satisfaction of doing so! That said, I didn't wear a safety jacket as the bike itself was white, and my jacket has a reflector strip on the back.

Each to own on this one,

Ride a lot ith a guy who wears a full dayglo jacket, he still gets the nod.

I sometimes do not get a nod back not cos i wear a dayglo vest, but as i was told by another biker, is thta i have a yellow headlight Thinking

Confused Don't quite understand that one. Keep in mind that there are people who neglect to do it at all, which is fair enough, if rude.

I just re-read my post, and thought I sounded like a dick. Typed it wrong I suppose! Wasn't having a go or anything, just wondering why people wouldn't wave due to a yellow light.

When I first started riding my bike I rembered I was wondering who the hell are these people nodding at me? I kept thinking it was my bike instructor's or somthing. I don't nod at people as I feel like a prick if they don't nod back, but if they nod to me im STRAIGHT back with a reply Smile

What I find funny is commuting home. As soon as I get past the M25 , people nod. As for day glo vests etc, if you can't see my headlights (dipped or full), my rear reflector, rear driving light, reflective logo's on jacket, reflector's on trousers and even reflectors on boots, then for gods sake stop reading the newspaper while you drive Laughing

yeahbut.... doesn't matter what you wear, if you're riding in the winter you're hardcore compared to the chequebook jockeys, and the sunday wannabe polishers..

so you're bound to get recognition..

Very Happy

Thats a crappy attitude.

If everyone did that no-one would ever nod. Think about it.

Nod first. If they dont nod back you are free to catagorise them as wankers.

And don't bother nodding to Harley owners, as they are all wankers.

Guy across the road rides a harley. Got no problem with him - gives me a wave if he sees me on the roads (or if he's outside when I return or leave).

I always nod first to most things. The only things I don't nod first to are your 1. Classics 2. L Platers 3. Harleys as they never returned my nods when I used to nod to them (mostly the Classics).

Yesterday i noticed a commuter on a bike with a hiv vis jacket. Not a waistcoat. The whole jacket was bright day glow stuff. He really did stand out. It made me think I shd dig out my similar thing but I cant remember where it is as i havnt used it for months.

The proper ones are really heavy duty shit, so either he wasn't wearing proper protective stuff underneath or was boiling in his own sweat!

To be honest, a thick padded day-glo jacket is going to give you a fair old bit of protection anyway. While it's no good for blatting along at 120mph down the M1, it's probably sufficient for pootling to work between lines of stationary traffic.

I came off after highsiding it at about 30mph, wearing my fleece and overcoat from work. Didn't get so much as a scratch, and the jacket only had scuff marks on it.
