Short Story:

My gloves smell like a badgers arse, they hein gericke winter gloves (Leather with knuckle guard... Can I wash these?

Also helmet padding... If I wash the padding will it deform it and stop it being such a good fit?

I've been wearing the same gear every day for a month... Sweating in it and all sorts, and I feel bloody gross putting it on every morning... I can wash teh textile suit but I don't get the chance to because I need it every day

Washing the gloves will make them worse than what you say they are now. Leather aint meant to be washed. Best buy a new pair

a tip I was given, but I've not yet tried...

if you gloves have no metal in them, then try microwaving them.

this is supposed to kill the bacteria, as it causes them to basically cook/explode .

also try sticking them in the freezer, although I tried this and it made no real difference.

The reason washing doesn't help, is i doesn't remove the bacteria (unless it's a HOT wash) and they just thrive in the damp environment left behind.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Can't microwave due to there being metal in the gloves

Don't really want to use salt because I have a phobia of crumbs/salt in my clothes (Don't start lol)

I think leaving them outside on a breezy day is a good one and will work.

Mybe for a week tho, and underneath something to stop them getting rained on. Tun them inside out if you can.

my gloves stunk after 2 mnoths aswell. i washed them, but they still bloody smell lol. i left them under the seat for a few months and just ride with my hands. it feels much more free, until it gets cold that is :p

Exposing the inside of them to UV light would do the trick. It would have to be for a decent length of time though (couple of hours exposure should kill any beasties).

Wouldn't use this in your helmet though as high levels of UV could degrade the polystyrene.

Of course, this is assuming you have access to an UV light in the first place.

Put them in a sealed plastic bag (so they dont get wet) and put them in the frezzer.

It supposed to kill the bugs.

Whatever you do, don't try what my mother suggested (and subsequently did to my gloves). Her idea was to use talcon powder as a wicker to absorb the water. It worked alright, but my gloves felt awful and whilst they didn't smell bad in themselves my hands stunk after I had worn them!

Lightly salt the inside.




Cook in the oven gas mark 6 for 75 minutes.



It wont do much for your gloves but I bet it tastes a dam sight better that that joint of beef my Mrs cremated at the weekend.

I don’t mean to disagree all these nice people but you can wash your gloves/leather.

If you have a summer/not waterproof gloves just wash them in a light detergent (antibacterial washing up liquid) if you’re clever you can just wash your bike and your gloves at the same time.

The only thing you have to do is oil the gloves as they dry out if you’re a tart you can get the proper leather care products for this or just use a little cooking oil.

For gloves with a lining just stick those in the washing machine on a cold wash when you take them out just dry of the outside and give it light oil before letting the gloves dry out. To help the gloves dry out just leave they in a dry place with a toilet roll holder in each one and they should dry out completely. The only real problem is some gloves the lining may well rot this is more to do with the sweet from your hands and the beasties living off it within your gloves attacking the material rather than washing but if there so smelly your thinking of chucking em you may as well try washing them.

Ugh @ the thought of wearing full textiles, commuting everyday. I'd rather run the risk than turn up to my work where they all call me smelly.

Do you work at the weekends? If not, wash them then.
