£76,000 SIGNS TELL YOU WHO OWNS THE ROAD

THE Government’s Highways Agency has spent £76,352 on new road signs in Cumbria, just to tell motorists which bits of road it maintains.

Thirty-four signs, which say ‘Highways Agency’ and ‘Highways Agency End’, have been put up as an experiment on the M6 and A66.

The Agency says it wants to “raise awareness” of its role looking after trunk roads and motorways.

Penrith and the Border MP David Maclean has branded the signs a waste of money.

He said: “I have never heard such tosh, drivel and rubbish in all my years as an MP.

“This is the most scandalous waste of £76,000 to tell motorists what they already know, that the Government is in charge of our motorways and major trunk roads.”

Mr Maclean spotted the signs several months ago and tabled a series of questions to Transport Secretary Alistair Darling.

His reply, in a Parliamentary written answer, stated: “The purpose is to advise road users that a road is maintained, managed and operated by the Highways Agency.

“This enables road users to direct their views to the correct authority and increases awareness of the Agency’s role in managing the country’s strategic road network.”

So far the experiment has been limited to Cumbria, where 23 signs have appeared on the M6 and its slip roads and 11 on the A66.

Mr Maclean added: “What rankles more is the hypocrisy. I have constituents who cannot get signs on the A66 directing visitors to their business, pub or tourist attraction.

“The Highways Agency says that it would lead to road clutter and the public would be confused by too many signs.

“Yet these same people are cluttering the M6 and A66 with 34 totally worthless signs with no interest to anybody except the busy little bureaucrats who thought of them.”

That is around £3000 a sign. I am in the wrong business.

All the best

Keith

Shocked WTF

The bureaucratic little prick that thought that idea up should be beaten senseless then used as a live feed for the local zoo's tiger enclosure.

Well they can't spend the money on putting "safety" cameras in, got to spend it some way, although that £76,000 could be used to say resurface a road in need or fill in some potholes.

i'll do them a sign made out cardboard, with permanant ink, and pva glue coating on (to water proof you see) and charge em £300 pound a sign. i'd be saying the government money and earning a tidy profit!

bit of a waste of £76k really

Dear Sirs,

Suggest you spend more money on the actual road, rather than just advertising the fact that you're the ones not spending any money on the actual road.

Cheers

Rob

Ahh my old local paper Shocked

Seems completely pointless.
also probably unnessecarily dangerous.
you have to take your eyes off the road to read a sign, so any that are utterly pointless are just an unneeded hazrd, no matter how slight.
