Don't you just bloody Hate it whena part goes walkabout when you're working on the bike.

Normally it's a ping-fuckit, that shoots across/falls down and/or generally vanishes when you're removing something..

in this case tho, it was the cap to my coolant expansion bottle (not the pressure cap thank god!)

it was there one minute, sat on the battery.. refilled with coolant after flushing out and cleaning the rad, next is was gone.. totally vanished!

I'd have thought something black and about the size of a £2 coin would be easier to find than the usual screw/washer/spring or other generic ping-fuckit, but can I see the bugger???

looks like it's going to be a DIY cap jobbie unless it turns up Neutral

arse, feck, biscuits!

sorry.. just had to rant Smile

The worst was a ball bearing, 2mm or so in size, under pressure from a spring, spang, off it goes into the garrage, found it eventually Rolling Eyes

Thought i'd dropped a bolt into the inspection cover of the tappets on the transalp though Shocked now that got me a bit worried! (ended up in the bash plate in some grime)

Re: The cap, you'll probably get one from halfrauds i'd imagine, or a breakers for not much Thumbs Up

Ah, it was plastic you see. It sneeks off and hides in the same place your pens do for some mutual comfort (well, certainly my pens, yours might have some loyalty Very Happy).

When I'm working on the bike, I usually slide a large piece of rubber under the bike, covering the inconveniently placed drain (right in the middle of the garage floor).

Monday last Suzuki came over to sort the front end of his bike out, new wheel bearings brake discs and pads. He didn't slide the rubber out, so undoing the calipers I had a moment as I watched a beautiful 10ml bolt rolling down towards the drain underneath the bike. Caught it just in time - but phew!

It'll turn up as soon as you have found a replacement. Always the same.

My worst was a screw for my rear brake fluid reservoir, which i dropped into gravel. Shocked Crying or Very sad

Took me 40 minutes of searching on my knees to find the little bugger.

There are 2 things to learn from this...

1) Don't do mechanics on a gravel surface.

2) Don't do mechanics whilst pissed.

the floor on the garage of our new house is shite at best. Its a very sandy cement that never took properly and now has holes in various places. Pretty much if we ever drop anything on that floor we dont find it again Sad

Hacks me off when I drop a nut or bolt inside the fairing, and it just sits in the belly pan. You can see the fecker, but you cant get a hand to it, so end up using a long screwdriver to try and push it out, only to find its not long enough!!!! Evil or Very Mad Mad

If you don't fancy releveling it (self leveling cement, costs but saves hassle Thumbs Up) suggest you get some sealant. Some info on such a project is available here but there are others if you google. HTH Thumbs Up

Ummm hell yes. My bike was off the road for about 4 weeks as there was a strange tapping noise coming from what I thought was the top end (Im a novice in bike mechanics) . Called 2 mechanics to look at it but they were both taking a holiday and promised to see to it when they got back . When one returned he told me I needed a cam chain tensioner and to go order one. When I went and picked it up and had a look at it .. I went fuck this I can fit it myself.
Anyway long story short, never look down it when the screw intended to hold back the 3 inch steel rod on the other end of a coiled spring isnt tightened. Needless to say it shot out caught my just above the eye socket (chipped the bone and cut me a nice one) shot up hit the roof of the garage and soared across to the end of the garage. After getting passed the dazed state it took me nearly 10 minutes to find the spring and the rod.
Lesson learnt there.

One on a not bike related topic. I have my septum pierced ( nose-bull ring if you will ) and decided to pick some booger off it whilst taking a piss. This was quickly followed by a nice "tink" noise of it dropping into the bowl . Queue me on my hands and knees throwing my hand down the back of the bowl to retrieve it. and yes I couldnt flush til I had it back.

So think of it this way..... it could be worse.

What is worse is if you have the rocker cover off and aren't sure if your pingshit went on the floor or down into the crankcase Shocked

I used to go on a Jawa technical forum. Jawa twins have loose needle rollers in the small ends. You always used to get posts asking how many there were suposed to be (26), then a reply of "Fukkit, I've only got 24 and I don't know if I dropped them on the floor or not."

I also remember telling my Dad not to unscrew the neutral switch on his bike with it parked on gravel because there was a 3mm ball bearing on the end of a spring in there. Of course he did it anyway (what do I know) then had a strop when I refused to help him look for it.

Bets your coolant bottle cap is in the belly pan (if fitted).

Clutch springs on automatics, classic pingers. I once lost the bolts that secure my headlight, think they ended up in the belly pan. Was fun trying to hoik myu scooter up onto its back wheen to roll the bugger out.

Worst one I've had was when my Dad decided to snap a plastic ruler in the garage next to my VFR's engine with the clutch cover removed. Rolling Eyes

We found all the shards but one, must've spent a good half hour poking around inside the engine to see if it was in there. Never found it and it hasn't blown up since so I guess I was lucky.

the fairing was off..

I had the rad out to de-gunk it, and give the coolant system a proper flush thru..

only place I can think is, it's somewhere around the engine, but even then, a good poke about with my micro maglite and a headtorch didn't turn it up Neutral

arse

I grab a tubber ware container and place all the bolts screws and bits in there when working on any thing makes sure i know where they are, also magnetic tools normally help. My farvorite one is the extanable magnet that is a life saver. There cheap to about £1 from halfords i think.

Two things have done this to me.

The first was the plunger on the 'clutch-in' detector switch on my GPX. Never found it so I never bothered about it. That is, until I took a left hander with the sidestand down Shocked

Soon replaced the switch - but not a soon as my underwear Exclamation

The second was a top-end head stock bearing (god, those little buggers are slippery, aren't they?). Took off the bars and the bearing carrier to clean and re-grease the bearings, and one of them dropped out. Could I find it? Could I f**k. I spent almost an hour looking all over the place, because when they hit a hard surface - like the concrete floor I was working on - they can bounce anywhere. I eventually found it stuck to the left hand fork strut by the little bit of grease it was covered in.

Don't you just love a bit of home maintenance ?

Dinky 2 stroke piston circlips that go ''pingfuckit'' across the workshop, or down into the crank cases Mad Piston fragments falling down into the crank cases aswell. Piston Ring snapped in my face when i was putting it on (thank f*ck i wear glasses!) The Gearbox from my cagiva placed carefully on a bench to find 2 days later it rolled off...(followed by 10 engine strips and builds getting all the gears right again) Which also had needle rollers on 2 of the gears and kept falling out Evil or Very Mad The Main Gearbox shaft snapped on a friends CR 250, so ripped it all apart, put all the gears in order, ordered the shaft, week later it comes i build it up, start it up, drive along 1st, 2nd, CHOMP no 3rd Shocked Rolling Eyes The daft circlips on CBR 1000's forks falling down the fairing, then found at the starter motor?! (after hours of trying to find it)

Generally circlips, needle rollers, ball bearings, and springs. If doing any work on your bike work in a well lit area with not a lot of junk around, use the correct tools, know where everything goes, and take your time.

And buy proper circlip pliers. I bought myself an 'open' and a 'close' set of circlip pliers today. To-date I had been using one of those ones with the interchangeable jaws that cost a tenner. The new ones were £15 EACH and are 100% better at doing the job, no effort whatsoever, even with the big fuck-off one that holds the wheel bearings in.
