A friend of mine recently crashed his bike and twisted the frame, yokes and front wheel. He's just gone and had it straightened but he's concerned that the bike might not be 100%. Are they usually fine after straightening or will it be considerably weaker??

I'm quite sure it'll be weaker, but by how much, it all depends on the bike and the severity of the crash surely.

What kind of bike was it?

The bike will be fine for normal use. However in a crash it will twist again in the same place, possibly worse than the first time.

As for riding it though - tell him not to worry about it.

Yes I can read and I'll ask again but this time I'll put it in bold letters so you understand.

GSXR750 or GSX750F You see there isn't a GSX750R thats why I'm asking.

According to google there is a GSX750R but you are quite right, the bike in question is a GSXR750.

Just like this

on the whole the frmae will be straighter if it was done in a jig. The bike will not have a handling issue if its been straightened but it will bend again in the event of a big crash!!!! It will be fine!! Thumbs Up

The test is torsional rigidity - the frame is twisted, and the ammount of torque required to twist the frame by one degree or radian is recored. the higher the ammount of torque needed to twist the frame, the more torsionally rigid it is.
Other than this, the manufacturer may apply a force upwards on the points where the swingarm and forks are linked to the bike, whilst placing a load downward on the middle of the frame. This would give an indication as to how much flex there is in the frame.

How do they straighten the frame? Do they just apply a torque to it with a jig, then soften it with a welding torch?
