Hey there gang,

Just a quick question....

With spiralling fuel and running cost for us daily commuters I am considering getting a 125 cruiser to get me to work and back on a daily basis. I am thinking of getting a 4stroke cruiser something like a VT Shadow to plod me up the motorway and back one juction. Only thing is I dont really know what this type of bike is like on fuel. I had a 96 NSR which did about 120 miles to a tank. My CX does 140 to 150 and I just wondered if anyone knew if a 4stroke cruiser job would be any better. Its only a 15 mile round trip, but I dont fancy using my CBR (when I get it after I move(30th)) daily because of fuel consumption. Keep her for fun and weekends!!

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

Wantser

Thumbs Up

A Basic CG125/SR125 type thing will be better for the fuel economy as they are much lighter.

If you want to be as economical as possible then a scooter would be better because CVT is more efficient with the engine power.

Assuming 96p a litre that is 10 litres of fuel so 86mpg, which is pretty good. Even at 80p a litre it works out at 72mpg.

When you include extra tax, MOT and insurance costs you might not save that much. 15 miles a working day is about 3750 miles a year. At 80mpg it is ~210 litres against 378 litres at 45mpg on the CBR. A saving of ~£200 a year in fuel. OK you save a bit in tyres and chains as well but it will take quite a while to actually save enough in running costs to pay for the bike.

All the best

Keith

First off a good idea but I can see two things wrong with the plan.
(1) A 125 is no good for regular motorway use.
(2) A 125 and especially a cruiser generally have small tanks so while good economy the actual range isn't great.

FWIW I know that something like the Kawasaki GT550 has a tank range of 200 miles to reserve (thing about 21.5 litre tank so that'd make the mpg above 40 ish).

Not sure on the economy figures but for what you want maybe one of the bigger (150cc+) scooters would suit better? IMO better keeping the CX for the commute (little maintenance costs) Thumbs Up

For a 15 mile round trip you want either a C90 or an H100. You will get over 100mpg out of both. I would go for the H100 because they are easier to fix and a bit pokier, C90s have been getting expensive recently. An H100 has a 2.5 gallon tank so you are looking at around 200 miles between refills.

They are fine on a motorway, I am willing to bet anyone who says they aren't has never ridden one on the motorway. It is better than a busy A road because you don't get people trying to squeeze past you. In fact, you will be amazed at how many cars you overtake. Motorways are designed to cope with reasonably slow traffic such as heavy artics and cars with caravans. You might get a sore backside from sitting in one position if you are going a long distance but other than that no problem.

didnt think 125 can go down the motorway

You can't if you are on L-plates. If you have a full licence you can go on the motorway with anything over 50cc.

My euro does 190 to the tank Razz (if your brave enough to get it down to reserve)

My cg would go forever on a full tank, however on a few longer stints at full throttle the entire way it would only manage 100miles before being more or less totaly empty (where as before it would go much further)

How about a cb250?

Haveing ridden 4stroke 125 on what was for all intents and purposes a motorway i'd not do it again, defenately not all the time unless it was 3am or something Confused

dont you have to have 33bhp to go down the motorway?

Nope, just over 50cc (so a c70 would be fine)

If you can't reach 60 then your asking for trouble though Shocked
