I passed my CBT last week and really enjoyed it (my first time on a public road on a bike) anyway im 35 been driving a car since i was 17, and i'm thinking of getting a 125 either rs or nsr, mates at work who ride 600's and 1000cc bikes say i would be wasting money getting a 125 because i would get bored with it in a few months and should do my full bike test (which i am doing anyway hopefully around august) and wait untill early next year to get a 600 (when the bike prices drop) but my way of thinking is get the 125 to gain road experiance on a bike and still have some fun.
any advice woulld be a great help thx. Very Happy

You could get a cheap CG (prolly what you did your CBT on) and play around for a bit or you could wait, pass (hopefully) and then buy anything. Dont have to be your dream bike right away.

Only you can answer honestly, but if you did pass your test this August would you really wait until next year to get a bike?

Naaa, didn't think so Wink

I passed my CBT in November 05 carried on riding on a 50cc moped until i passed my A2 test then got a 500. I thought 125 would be a waste of money because I was already bored of the 125 at the training centre after 2 days of road riding.

Soooo.....I say miss out the 125 if you are confident enough and go for the bigger bikes

Do your DAS and get a big bike!

Dont buy an expensive 125 because you WILL want a bigger bike when you pass your test, but if you can get a cheapy that you wont lose money on you can spend a couple of months getting some experience (and enjoying the summer weather) whilst you organise a DAS course/test.

But a good argument can be made for getting a 125.
If you buy a cheap CG or another 4 stroke (which doesnt require a lot of maintainance) then you can probably sell it for about what you bought it for = "free" road experience.
The resale values of 125's are always high because they are constantly in demand.

Just been through exactly the same thing, same situation, at almost the same time in life too, I'm not just sending my rough advice on what to do, I very strongly say yes get a bike now, 210% .

Get an 125 I would not go more that £1500, and if you get a popular model you will loose next to nothing on it.
Once you get it, ride it and ride it lots, it will not only be such a buz pushing it learning new things you can do with them, but you will save yourself training days on DAS and be so much more confident on a bigger bike and test day.
Getting use to riding a bike takes some getting used to, part the bike and part getting used to other road users, so many differences from a car. Plus when you start riding you wont be using the bike to it's full, most people tip toe around until you find out what they can do.

Far better to learn from you mistakes on something that's less likely to kill you. Passed my DAS now and on a 600, going though the same thing getting used to it, how to handle the power etc, so glad I got the basics down first.

oh by the way been told best time to do training is in autumn winter as training schools are quiet and after custom rather than people that want to be on the bike for summer.

Purely my opinion but hold out, do your DAS and get a 600.

That's what I did, missed out on all the 125 rubbish. Rode around on a 650GS BMW for a bit but then though stuff this, and bought a GSX-R600.

Don't be intimidated by bigger bikes their only as dangerous as the person in control of them, and when used sensibly are ridiculously good fun, my cheeks were sore from grinning so bloody hard Razz

If you're looking for a sports bike later, I'd get something like an NS125 now. These can be got from about £400 for a slightly tatty one and you shouldn't lose much selling it.

Experienced gained will be very useful though.
