First off if this thread upsets anyone I appologise. it is not meant to offend or upset anyone.

The question is would you stop biking if a friend or loved one died in a bike accident ? and if so why ?

I used to work for a guy who was a good friend too who died in a bike accident. He was also the father of my Girlfriends kids. now as tragic and unfortunate as it was my GF didnt stop riding and has no intention of doing so. I started riding a couple of years later. and neither of us would stop her kids riding either. Riding was his life and he died doing somthing he loved (probably nearly as much as the missus)

Unfortunatly Bikers die and we all go out knowing the risks that when we swing out leg over the bike that somthing could go wrong. No matter if you are the most sensible rider in the world or a nutter who goes round the lanes at 100mph. none of us can account for other peoples actions (cagers) but we still ride.

why does this change when we know the person ??? surely riding would be a kind of tribute to somthing you both loved doing ???

again my appologies if I have upset anyone.

My best mate was killed on his fzr400, 6 months later his bike became the basis of my 400/1000 project. Very Happy

You can get killed crossing the road but it doesnt stop anyone.

One of my cousins partners brother came of his bike pretty bad, he has given up riding now as his brother may never walk again.

Can't.

If it had been me,he wouldn't/couldn't have stopped either.

Although I miss him badly,he died doing what he loved, and it was quick.

Just a shame it wasn't 50 years later. He was only 30.

I dont think i would, if my best mate had an accident, i dont think he would want me to stop riding.

I know for a fact that if anything happened to me, i wouldnt want anyone to stop biking because of it. I know how much biking means to me, and others.

People get killed in cars from time to time aswell, but it doesnt stop people driving.

People cope with things in different ways, although i wouldnt stop riding, i would most certainly calm down. I suppose its an unfortunate reality check?

Still though Thumbs Down to the idea of anything like this ever happening to anyone Sad

A popular member from southwestbikers.com died this year and so far no-one has given up biking because of him, we all did a memorial ride, 100 bike going to the memorial service and pay their tributes. It's sad but I still gotta ride cause it is great fun!

Quick question: how would you feel (joking aside I know you would be dead but it's hypothetical) if someone gave up biking because you died in an accident?

I'd rather they didn't give up, don't want either my bad luck or stupidity what ever it may be, put them off having fun. hopefully none of us will be put in this situation though!

I wouldn't wish anyone to be unhappy because of me.

If one of my mates did get killed on the bike I don't think I would give it up, wouldnt imagine them wanting me to.

If I was killed I wouldn't want it to put anyone off biking, I'd want them to know I died doing something I loved.

We should all be aware of just how easy it is to have one slip up and be the end of it all. If you didn't already know that you shouldn't be riding.

this gets annoying sometimes because in reality, yes bikes are dangerous or rephrased they are very vulnerable, but you see many people die in car crashes, but it never comes up "if your mate died driving a car in a car accident, would you stop driving"
why is it any different with bikes??
the only way it can affect people, or atleast me, woudl be if i had an accident and i became scared and concerned about riding because of what can happen.
but if you spend all your time worrying about what could happen, how can you ever enjoy anything?

It's because people still see driving as a necessity and biking as a hobby.

It doesn't click that both are forms of transport, people see bikes as a toy and a car as a tool.

One way someone put it to me was that "more people die in bed than anywhere else but that doesn't stop us sleeping". That basically sums up how i feel about it.

The other half was worried when I took up biking as she had a Major off years back ( she's older than me ).

Years ago when I was about 8/9 the bloke over the road from me died due to a collition with a van, the whole street was full of bikes and during the years I've become good neighbours with his Dad.

He keeps reminding me of the dangers but loves the sound of the bike in the street.

These events are in the back of my mind when I ride but there is NO way I could give up biking now.

EVER!

mmm interesting one this.

I love my bike, but to be honest I think that maybe if I had kids and stuff I'd probably knock it on the head, just thinking about leaving them (even though they dont exist yet) makes me think its not worth it. Does that make sense??

That makes me sound a selfish bastard when it comes to my excuses for wanting a bigger bike! My missus is against me getting a bigger bike as we have two young kids (6 months and 3) but I am adamant I will get my SV650. I have had my licence since 96 but never used it althought it pained me not to (due to job) I got a scooter 2 years ago so am due for a bigger bike (cheaper with 2 years NCB!)

I would hate to leave my kids behind and yes that thought runs through my head all the time expecially when you read threads like this or it happens to someone you know. I think biking is in your blood and as far as im concerned. I think I would need therapy to remove all biking thoughts going through my head on a daily basis!

Fair one. Each to his own I spoze. I can see how people would carry on even if someone close to them died, I spoze its for everyone to do what feels right. I dont think its selfish necessarily though.

Look at this photograph..

https://www.bikepics.com/pics/pics/honda-nsr125-01-bikepics-480926.jpg

On the left is my bike, still got it
Next is a derbi 50, the bloke crashed it and it's in bits
Next is one of my best mate's bikes, a CG125. He had a BAD crash and wrote it off (it now looks like this
Next is another of my mate's bikes, a CB125. He had a small spill on this, and now the motor has packed up, so that's gone.
Next is my mates ped.. that's still going
Then another ped, he's come off too
Far right is my workmate's RS125.. after a string of accidents, he's sold up to get a car
In the background on the crosser is Trist. The crosser got destroyed, then trist got himself an RS125. He had a bad crash on this, had 80+ stitches, and is still in a lot of pain.

So out of all those bikes back in December, 2 of us are still on the road Shocked

OK so nobody was killed in those accidents, but it still makes you think. I've had a pretty spectacular crash, too, since then, but the bike wasn't badly damaged and it's back in daily use.

That's how it goes eh?
