Hi,

Are there any chains/padlocks which are recognized by insurance companies?

Would the saving I make with them outweigh the extra cost of buying one?

Cheers,

Craig

Yes you need to look for the ones that state Thatcham Approved or Sold Secure. These are locks/chains that have met with certain standards and are theoretically better than the ones that don't have any approved standard.

It is not that likely that the saving you will make on your insurance will outweigh the cost of buying one, but if you need a chain anyway it might be worth getting a decent approved one in the first place.

The Oxford Monster is Sold Secure, great chain, I use it.

£99 from Hein Gericke, but I think I've seen some go for £89 on eBay.

I heard the Abus locks have some kind of deal thing, if someone gets through it, they’ll give you the money for the bike.

A while ago I compiled this list (see attached) of Thatcham approved mechanical security measures (that's locks, chains, etc.). You'll need to check the most recent pdf though to see if anything hasn't been added removed (click this link for pdf list of security systems link).

I have the list as a larger pdf if you can't access .doc files (PM me if required).
