There are many advantages to the wearing of British army combat/assult boots including robust construction, waterproofness, comfort, ease of movement and price.

Sidi vertigo's are lovely boots, and have quite a narrow fitting which tend to suit womens feet. If you want them to flex, then go for the cheeper ones without the instep straps, which tend to 'lock' you in place.

They aren't water-proof though, and are generally classed as summer race boots. I use mine in winter, but also have a pair of cheapies that are waterproof for the crap days.

If you have the cash, for the cold and wet days I'd go for a pair of cheap £50 waterproof winter boots, akito, nitro or similar, with enough room for a nice pair of woolly socks, and a pair of decent summer boots for the drier days. If your commute is only 5 miles, your not really gonna feel the cold anyway.

I'd have thought most places would order your size and maybe one bigger for you to try if you were genuinely interested in making the purchase. Being italian, Sidi's are cut quite small BTW.

All the best.

After getting T-Boned the other day and the car hitting me in the ankle/foot I would say get a boot with as much protection as possible. My boot saved me from a broken leg I reckon.

I use the same boots for summer and winter. They are Prexports (don't know what model) and are leather. Really should get a new pair, these must be about 12 years old.

Your best bet is try loads on because its the same with shoes, remember though that it takes longer for them to bed in as you dodnt do much walking in them

How about these

All the tarty racer style boots won't be waterproof so I suggest you invest in a pair of these to keep your toes nice and dry. I wore a pair of these under my Sidi Vertigo boots through torrents of Irish rain and they worked really well. Very Happy

I have a pair of Oxtar TCS Goretex boots - warm in winter, but cool enough for summer, waterproof, well-armoured. I've crashed twice in mine and they're barely scratched Thumbs Up

Probably worth a try if you have broad feet Very Happy

I use elf goretex boots. They suited me best so I selected them regardless of price high or low. They were just like order made for me. Very lucky.

You do need to be a bit careful here, my reach to the ground when I've got my Alpinestars (tarty race version) on is decreased quite a bit cos I can't get on tiptoes so well - it's not so much the foot as the ankle which is quite reinforced in mine. They have got better over time though, I could barely change gear when I first got them. The less plasticy ones shouldn't be so bad, though they still need a bit of breaking in.

J&S in New Malden (just near Kingston) might be worth a trip, they're a pretty big shop and had a pretty decent range the last time I was in. Though you might be pushed to find a 37/38 anywhere, I had a job finding a 40 to try on. I'll have a look next time I'm in Gericke if I remember.

If you end up going mail order, www.customlids.co.uk are very cool and quite happy to take returns.

What do you wear now? When I was a scootergirl I just wore chunky lace up boots like HiTec Magnums, more for a bit of grip when putting my foot down than anything else. Didn't worry too much about crush protection or anything cos it's easy to jump off the side of a step through. Smile

Alpinestars GPS 3, I got these as as my first pair of boots, they are waterproof, warm and a great overall boot, they come with sliders on the boot aswell.

Not a lot of difference between leather and goretex, goretex has the advantage of being breathable, whereas leather is not always breathable (i know this as i work in a millets store)

Ride magazine recommends the Alpinestars GPS 3 and for £99 you can't get a better boot.

Hope that helps

Alpinestars brought out the '4W' range this year, especially designed for women (narrower fit basically).

Hein Gericke do other makes as well as their own stuff, worth ringing your local branch to see if they've anything in your size. If there's not a shop in London, Slough's not actually that far for you, straight along the A4.

As for whether you 'need' them or not, tough call. Probably seem like overkill until you get your foot trapped between your bike and something hard.

Ps. I used to have Alpinestars SMX Goretex and they were really good.

Good place to look maybe Genesis rider training. They are in New Haw near to brooklands. They are probably the only place i know that are geared mainly for womens training and have a shop with all you could want. Maybe an idea to give them a call and see if they can help.

01932 352007.

They are a friendly bunch and will probably be able to help. The women who owns it is a racer so if she hasn't got it she will more than likely be able to point you in the right direction.

You may find they become a bit 'baggy' come summer if your wearing bulky winter socks during the damper months. It may be worth your while spending a few extra £ on decent thermal yet thin socks, rather than your average woolly mamoth Millets jobbies. Something of Merino wool would be ideal, which also stays warm when wet.

With regards to whether you need the advanced protection; IMO, why pay £100 for average boots, when you can pay a bit more and get something which was designed to be a no compromise solution. They should last a few years so it pays to buy good; buy once.
