anyone got a idea of how much a garage would charge to change the valve clearance shims on a 1000cc 20 valve yamaha thunderace. Question

basicly wanting to know how much l could expect to pay.

Hi

Depends whether any need changing or if it is just a check. Shims are not that expensive (~£3 each I think, except in the unlikely event that if you need 20 of them it soon adds up), but to change them means taking the cams out.

All the best

Keith

for me to do it at work https://www.parkroadpowerbikes.co.uk/index.asp you would be looking at 2 hours labour at £48.50 ph just to check them, and then however long it takes on top to change them if u need any at all.

then each shim is £4.75

then u gotta add the oil, cooland and rocker cover gasket.

Thumbs Up

Hmm, I hope the blokes at Park Road are better on the microfiche than they used to be. Tried to sell me two sets of brake seals for a Thundercat a few years back, I thought 198 quid for brake seals was a bit pricey Very Happy Shocked Very Happy Shocked Shocked

Cheers

the garage near me quoted £130 to check the valves only, then any extra labour and parts additional after that.

i think my valve clearences really need checking, would love to do it myslelf then let the garage know what needs doing, but i dont trust myself withg such a big job.

20 valve yammy genesisexup//thunderace/cat shim changes still give me nightmares to this day.

Hence the shift from FZRs to an early bolt and locknut adjusted GSXR.

I checked the valve clearances my self last week (8 hour job, pain in the ass getting to the rocker cover). the tightest valve l found was a exhaust valve 0.02mm way from the minimum clearance, So they defiantly need doing.

Of course after l spent all day doing this l get a lecture from my old man about why do l always fiddle with my bikes and that l shouldn’t of bothered checking the valve clearances or to pay to have them adjusted. His idea of bike maintenance is to not change the oil etc and run them till they break.
