Questions at the end of the practical test?

Hi all. Got my test booked for the 9th Nov. I've already started taking some lessons which are going great. My only real concern is the questions at the end of the test. What are the most likely questions that i'll be asked? And if you get one or both of them wrong, do you fail the whole test? I would be greatful if you could all post the questions that you were asked after your tests, the answers would be nice to. Cheers everyone

You just put the tyre pressure up a bit when taking a passenger don't you? Or is there more?

Yea pressures, may also need to alter suspension... other things worth saying - make sure they have a helmet, tell the pillion that you will support the bike when stopped, allow more time for braking, accel will be reduced.....

EDIT- I was asked about a pillion and what things you should consider when taking them.

For some weird reason 1 or 2 might go out of you're head because of nerves, But he asked me,

What to adjust with the pillion (He helped me out)
Checking the tire thread, That was it i think.
& OMG i misread a numberplate twice because of nerves my eyes where blurry lol

Erm, I don't think if you say a wrong one it's a straight fail, he miht help you out a bit but if you aint gotta clue then...

Cheers fellas. Keep them coming please. I really don't want to do a good test and then mess it all up with a few questions at the end. Oh, this is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but i'll ask anyway. Tyre preassure on bikes, do all tyres get the same pressure reguardless of the size of them. Example, would a 1000cc Fireblade's tyres be kept at the same PSI as say, an RS125? And if so, what should that PSI be for the front and rear? Thanks again

I think the examiner will also be looking for you to mention mirror adjustment too if asked about carrying a pillion.

Don't worry about it too much - I was told by my instructor that you cannot fail based on the questions at the end.

They are simple anyway - really are just common sense. Just take a couple of moments to think about the question before answering.

The question he asked me at the MOT centre before the test was "How would you sound the horn" and "How would you check for oil".

At the end of the test he asked me "How would a pillion affect your handling".

On the day of the test my mind went blank at such questions and sort of constructed a very vauge answer, but they still have to pass you even if you get the questions wrong and your riding was satisfactory.

I got asked how would taking a pillion affect the bike at the end of the test.
My answer was it would make the bike top heavey, take longer to accellerate and longer to stop. He already knew i work on cars so i guess he skipped the maintenance crap. Also i didnt get my eyesight checked ?
Like others say, just think about the questions before you answer them and you will be fine.

something that confused me very slightly was the observations and the lifesavers:

mirror/Signal/Observation/Change position/Adjust speed/Lifesaver/Turn

is wrong really, what it should be (if moving):

mirror/Signal/Observation/Change position/turn

or if stationery or almost stationery at a junction or something then its:

mirror/Signal/Observation/Change position/Adjust speed/Lifesaver/Turn.

the observation part of that equation should be done without thinking really as it's only the part where your turning and your looking as your turning (mentally picture crossing the road, you don't look then cross you tend to look and keep looking as your crossing or I do rather). Just remember lifesaver before you pull out into a junction/roundabout etc when stopped.
Observations are quick glances when changing lane and other instances similar to that, lifesavers are when stationery or nearly so.

Dunno if that helps you atall as it confused me for a while. I think I have it right? someone can help me out if any of that's incorrect.

carrying a pillion will affect your handling, excelleration and breaking, also your lights and mirrors

when carrying a pillion you adjust lights suspension, mirrors and tyre pressure

is it a case of just giving him a few of the right answers (balance and stopping/accelleration distances for example) or do they expect you to run down everything that a pillion effects?

Here are a list of questions they could ask at the end of the test:

1) What instructions might you give to a pillion passenger who has not been on a motorcycle before?

Must wear all the necessary safety equipment Helmet, Boots, Jacket, Gloves etc. Must sit astride the motorcycle facing forwards, keeping feet on the foot rests at all times, and hold on to the grab rail or rider at all times. No arm signals should be given, they should look over the riders right shoulder. Most importantly they must lean with the rider round bends.

2) How may a pillion passenger affect your riding of the motorcycle?

Increased stopping distance - Leave bigger gaps 4 seconds instead of 2. Lighter steering thus slower acceleration. More top heavy - be more careful at low speeds. Possible mirrors being obstructed - may need to look over shoulder more

3) What would happen in a left/right hand corner if the pillion did not lean with the rider?

The motorcycle would turn in a straighter line onto the wrong side of the road

4) How would you adjust the motorcycle for carrying a passenger or load?

Stiffen rear suspension, increase rear tyre pressure, check headlamp and mirror position, put pillion pegs down.

5) How would you load a motorcycle with luggage?

Equally on both sides with the weight kept as low as possible (e.g in paniers)

6) How would you deal with crosswinds when riding?

Lean into the wind, slow down if necessary, take care when passing gaps between buildings, bridge supports, high sided vehicles etc.
