PostPosted: 12:07 - 25 Sep 2005    Post subject: CBR starter! [HELP!] Reply with quote

ok, i just got my cbr, and am having problems with it. It has just had a new battery put in it, which i charged all night. It started ok this morning, but wont start now.

The starter moter seems to turnm but slows down, as iff the battery is dead. However the battery reads 12v on a multimeter!

once i leave the battery on the charger for a bit (30min) it will turn over ok. but as soon as i kill the engine, it wont start, the motor turns over very slowly and then stops. ???

all the signs say its a dead battery, but the battery reads a full 12v?!?

pleas help

Does sound like a dead/dying battery - are you sure it's new (did you buy it yourself)?

Measuring the voltage will give you a rough idea of how well the battery is but what you are really interested in is the current its supplying, which can be a bit harder to measure without something going bang.

A quick thing to check is to see if the charging system on the bike is working ok - charge the battery, put it in and attach your multimeter: should read slightly above 12 (~12.1v) . Start the bike - you should see the voltage drop a bit (~10v) while the starter motor is spinning. Once the motor is started you should see the voltage go up to ~13v to ~14v.

If the voltage stays around 12 with the motor running, there's a good chance the charging system isn't working properly - i.e. the ignition system is running off the battery and draining it.

Does the bike have a charge/alternator light? do you see it come on when you turn on the ignition and go off once it's started?

Also worth considering if you have an alarm or immobiliser which is draining the battery.

The voltage on the battery was 12v, then when the ignition was turned you could hear the starter winding slowly, The meter read 6-12v then returned to 12 when the key was released, never got the bike started again as the last time it was running i wanted to open the seat up but it was locked and the bike had to be stopped to use the key, then the battery never got a chance to be checked when the bike was running as it wouldent wind over fully. SOunded like the starter was winding but wasnt putting the solenoid out to engage the teeth.

Sounds like it's flat now and there's not much you can do to diagnose the problem with a flat battery. You'll be convincing yourself all sorts of things are broken when in fact it's the half-dead battery all along.

I always find the best thing to do in these situations is to remove the old battery completely and hook up the bike to a good car battery, using an ill-advised combination of jump leads, old bolts and insulating tape. Usually the bile will start right up.

The bike seems to work ok, so you're looking for it either not charging when the motor is running or draining itself when it's not.

yea thanks for that, il shall try the il advised method of bolts, jumpleads and insulating tape lol Laughing

will post when ive done that

Ok, i jumpe started it from my mates car, and it started no bother. On closer inspection, the battery looks old enough, so it seems highly ikely that the battery is sh@gged. so hopefully a new battery tomorow will solve the problem.

thanks for the input Very Happy Thumbs Up

Well Done.

Hope you didn't fall foul of the "I'll put a new battery in it for you, mate" a.k.a. "I'll charge the hell out of it and wipe the outside with an old rag" trick.

Be careful with that new battery, if your regulator/rectifier is mullered then it can kill even a new battery in double quick time. You NEED to check the output from the reg/rec and the only way to do that is with a multimeter.

Once the bike is running at idle, you should see about 13V across the battery terminals, revving the engine should show about 14.5V but NO higher. Anything above 15.5V will cook your brand new battery and you'll be back to square one.

Cheers

This happened to my cbr, underneath the ignition there is are 3 wires, pull them out of there casing and have a look at them, one of mine had melted and was causing a loose connection so i twisted the wire back together and tightened it with insulating tape and a piece of wire, dont know if this is your problem but check it out anyway Thumbs Up

No didn't need to just pulled them out of the casing that holds all 3 of them and i had enough slack to just twist the wires back on itself and secured it with insulating tape, will probably replace the wire at some point but works fine at the moment, needed to replace the main fuse on mine aswell so id check if thats alright

I had similar problems recently.
I put a new battery in and after a few weeks was getting the same problem. (I also had been experiencing worse issues when the bike was hot?)

I replaced my reg/rec last week and now everything seems hunky dory. Thumbs Up

I'm tempted to check those connections at the ignition incase there is any damage.
