im getting really pissed off with the slowness and crap handling of my scooter, so when im 17 in may im going to do my A licence and get a 33bhp restricted bike, im not too keen on getting anything under a 400 cos i love bigger bikes. i was thinking about getting a kawi ninja 600 or maybe a zxr400, or what bike would you recommend? also what will insurance be like on one of these?
my scooter insurance is £286 tpo so for a 600 ninja maybe about £1200?

thanks in advance Cool

Let's get one thing straight. 400's are shite. They fall to bits, they are stupidly expensive to keep on the road, you get laughed at by anyone who rides a bigger bike and lets face it, you generally have a small knob if you own one.

Insurance? Who the hell knows, phone up and find out, I could take a guess at £500 but it could be more than £2k because we don't know your riding back ground/bike security/ncb/postcode etc.

*bite, god, someone, please* Wink

Whatever bike takes your fancy to be honest, try them out and see. Oh and don't get sucked into this 33bhp limit malarky, I find if you say your bike is 33bhp, then it is 33bhp. You don't need to get it restricted.

If you have 1ncb you can reasonably expect to insure a 400 for about £500-£800tpft if you shop around. I would hedge a guess a sports 600 may be pushing into four figure values.

Kurt

edit - my 400 aint fell to bits, not expensive to buy nor run nor insure (£8 petrol will last over 100 miles). Never had big bikes laugh at me before. Lets face it if a 400 is a small bike, a 600 aint a big bike is it Wink

your post has been bitten Razz

actually i was thinking about a gixxer, and also an r6 but im sure that insurance companies wont want to insure me on an r6 with only 1 years ncb. but then again i could be wrong, the r6, the gixxer 600 or the ninja is what id be aiming for, ive got £5000 from parents to spend on the bike and insure it, and ive seen some quite good bikes go for about 3 grand, which would leave 2grand for ins. and after the 2 year period i can take the restrictors out and have a proper bike Cool although they might accidently fall out before then? Going from a scooter to a sports bike isn't a great idea.

I would recommend something a bit more docile like a Bandit or a Hornet.

Try telling that to any r1 rider who has been blitzed around a twisty lane by a vfr400 or rvf... even the press say it...

oh and watching a recent cadwell park trackday, i witnessed a vfr400 take nothing less than a zx10r lap by lap.

ever heard of the phrase "all the gear no idea", tis quite truthful when many of the people who buy 1000cc sportsbikes would actually be able to ride a 400 or 600 better.....

Im currently in the same dilemma at the moment. I like the look of the 400's but in my price range its going to be an early 90's or late 80's model, and my Dad and I don't like the idea of such an old bike incase it breaks down and is hard to get parts for. So have been looking into things like bandits or the other end of the scale gixxer 600s. However I've got a plethora of quotes over the internet ranging from £2k for an NC30 to 2.5k for a ducati biposta 996 thingy. So I'll be ringing around getting quotes tommorow in my name, then Dad has offered to have me as a named rider on his policy for a year, as by this time is up I will have a year NCB from my 50 and being 18 the price should decrease a tad.
Hope this helps
Alex

Providing I can drop it a couple of hundred pounds by phone, I think I can insure a ZX6R at 17 for £600, TPFT, which ain't half bad.

I'm going from a 50 to a 600, don't like the idea of a pansy 400, plus I'm going straight to a 600 because I don't want to waste time and money on a 125, so I figure the same applies to a 400.

Restriction you want to get it restrcited to 33BHP for 2 reasons-

-Given the step, 33BHP is going to feel like a monster.
-You will get a certificate. If you don't have this, expect a ban.

Then when the bike feels slow and you feel capable of faster speeds and acceleration, feel in control of the bike a bit more, take the restrictors out and let it rip your arms off.

INSTIGATOR , YOUR OPINION ON 400's IS TOTAL RUBBISH!! YOU HAVE OBVIOUSLY NEVER OWNED ONE. HOW CAN A 400 BE EXPENSIVE TO RUN COMPARED TO A 600??? FOR ONE ITS CHEAPER TAX. IF YOU HAVE OWNED ONE YOU WERE OBVIOUSLY SOLD A COMPLETE SHED AND DIDNT REALISE DUE TO YOUR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BIKES!! I SUGGEST YOU DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE GIVING YOUR ADVICE TO OTHERS! AT THE END OF THE DAY WHATEVER BIKE YOU HAVE BOILS DOWN TO PERSONAL CHOICE - RIDING POSITION, LOOKS AND OF COURSE WHAT YOU INTEND TO USE/RIDE THE BIKE FOR. IT APPEARS TO ME YOU THINK THAT BIGGER IS BETTER - WRONG!! A 400 SPORTS BIKE WOULD TAKE MANY A BIGGER BIKE ON THE TRACK OR TWISTY ROADS. THERE HAS BEEN MANY AN ARTICLE ON 400's SUCH AS THE RVF, VFR CBR, AND ZXR AND EVERY TIME REMARKS MADE ON THIER ABILITY TO OUTRIDE BIGGER BIKES NOT TO MENTION THE IMENSE FUN FACTOR!!!!!!!

I PERSONALLY SEE NOTHING BAD IN HAVING A 400, THEY ARE NOT EXPENSIVE TO RUN, THE INSURANCE IS CHEAP AND THE PARTS ARE NOT HARD TO GET HOLD OF.

AT THE END OF THE DAY A TRUE BIKER WOULD RESPECT ANOTHER BIKER REGARDLESS OF WHAT BIKE THEY RIDE. GENUINE BIKERS LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER.

OH AND AS FOR THE 'SMALL DICK' - WELL, IT DOESNT MATTER ABOUT SIZE - ITS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU USE YOUR MACHINE!!!!

Two with one fishing line. Fantastic. Wink

I still say go for a 600, you'll get less bored of them and will get a decent step up in power when you get rid. Make more sense really I would say.

i'm sorry...well actually no i'm not sorry but all the people that said 400's can be outrun buy 600s are talking bullshit, i ride with a couple of guys, one's got a K5 Gixxer (soon to be a K6, when it comes out) one's got a CBR600 05 and one's got an R6 2005 and guess what? i fucking trash them half the time except when we pull out onto a straight road, being only 17 that's fine by me my bike hits 135 mph and i'm fine with going that speed i'm not gonna ride a bigger bike till i'm say 19 i just don't see the point in trying to kill yourself at such a young age, just wait a bit! but whatever, it's your choice at the end of the day, and i'll admit 2001 model Gixxers look fucking awesome and are pretty easy to come by.

Get a 400, ridden well, you'll wonder if you'll ever need anything more. It'll also teach you a lot about motorcycle control as you don't have the speed/power to cover up poor riding.

Among the questions my bike usually attracts is "is it the 750?", partly down to its looks/sound/rarity/crowd pleasing appeal and partly down to how quickly they'd just seen it shift down the back roads on the way there.

Waiting for shaun to have his say. He lost his gixxer 600, and went to a 400. weird huh considering people are making them out to being so shit. Also if you want to see a gixxer get thrashed by a zxr 400 i have a video of it.

From what i know shaun got on a 400 to learn how to ride, they handle a lot better. You will find you will get bored quite quickly of stright line speeds on a 600 and want to get into the twistys. So your there beating your mate in stright line along there motorway and you come to a twisty, and he kills you because his bike handles better and it has a easier manageable power output through the corner.

Then you will be kicking yourself thinking why didnt i listen. And lets face it, is the extra 400 pound on insurance worth an extra 20 mph top end and another .5 seconds of the 0-60 when your being thrashed through the twistys.

At the end of the day if your a good rider, or become a good rider you will beat a 600 on most things but a drag race.

ive got £5000 from parents to spend on the bike and insure it

Lucky you!

I wouldn't go blowing all that on a bike though. Especially as it's your first bike and you'll probably drop/crash it. Also if you buy something new you'll lose allot in depreciation when you go to sell it in 12 months time when your bored of it.

I'd say go for something like a Bandit 600, Fazer 600, Hornet 600 or SV650s. Enough power to keep you interested and they won't be that expensive to insure. If your paying nearly £300 TPO for a scoot then you'll be easily £1,500/£2,000 for a sports 600 that your then going to restrict to 33BHP. What's the point in that? And with the money you've saved I recommend you spend it on things like the IAM, Bikesafe courses and track days to improve your skills as a rider.

That is total rubbish. I can outride my dad on a cb400 around country roads when he rides his gsxr750. I havnt spent a penny to keep on the road and ive never been laughed at.

If you get a 600 restricting it could lose its acceleration and top speed when you remove them so you might want to consider that.
