reg plate non transferable

That is correct, it cannot be moved to any other vehicle other than the one its on currently.

Don't these normally refer to Q plates, or to plates issued to old vehicles to replace those which have been transferred to another vehicle?

Normally yes, my GPZ500S had had a Private reg from new so never had a registration number issued to it.

So when the first owner retained the Private Reg, the bike was issued with an age related registration and thus it was non transferable.

I thought you could transfer number plates, you just cant make your vehicle appear newer than it actually is!

Well all plates bought through the DVLA have a different prefix to 'normal' plates, and I assume you can't just 'swap' plates with someone.
