Ever seen those jackets that look really nice but some tit decided to pick a horrible colour for it. Yes, the ones that go on ebay for nothing (£20), yet the same jacket with a better colour sceme goes for more (£50). Well I got the horrible coloured one and changed it for £3.95...

First off find your local art and crafts/hobby store. Uhuh, the shops that are full of weirdo's but it's the only place you can get this stuff...
https://img184.imageshack.us/img184/14/paint0di.jpg

Next off prepare your surface. Clean the piece of leather you want to paint. I used parafin, no idea if it was good for the job but I couldn't be arsed with buying "leather cleanser". Mask off the area your painting, don't want to make a mess now do we.

Next, you need to mix up your paint with abit of water. This is so it can soak into the leather and make a good base layer.

Started to apply the diluted mixture...

Right, now you want to mix abit more paint into the water to make it thicker. After this layer you will be ready to use just the paint, no water.
You should be look at something like this, if not hit yourself HARD...

I applied a few more coats of just the paint to build up a good finish...

Well it just started pissing it down and I was reading through my post to check for mistakes and noticed the picture with the jacket outside on the chair! Doh!

Thank god it had dried, hasn't run at all. Thumbs Up

I dunno, but it just pissed it down and my jacket was left outside. Nothing has run at all. You'd need a power washer to get it off. I'm not really going to use this jacket for bad weather, I have my £££ rukka jacket for that.

Acrylic is a plastic. So no, acrylic paint is not water soluble. its a bugger when the paint dries in the tub though... was the leather you painted black?

Can you get flourescent/reflective paint too? My leather jacket's mostly all black and I would like to paint a reflective design on the back. (I could even paint a tromp l'oeil (is that how you spell it) Sam Browne belt! LOL Laughing Maybe not)

LoL.

But seriously thanks for the tip. I have my eyes set on a used Cagiva Planet that has a custom metallic blue and sunflower yellow paint job and was wondering how If I'll be able to find some matching leathers/textiles. (Again I'm a newbie and if matching bike colours and leathers are not IT don't flame)

Cheers

I use to have a cagiva planet, great bikes. You can get metallic colours aswell if you want to change the jacket colours. I wouldn't recommend changing alot of the jacket e.g. The black on mine. I changed nice small simple pieces, easy to redo if it wears out.

I have no idea how acrylic does in the long-term but it'll be interesting to see how you get on.

If looked after should be ok for a few years. Chances are he'll be re-doing it by next year to some degree. Acrylic paints are prone to cracking as they are a type of plastic. On a material which bends alot it's bound to appen, especially exposed to a mixture of sun and rain etc...
