As some of you may be aware, i live in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates at the moment but undoubtedly will be moving back to UK at some point.

Now i've heard being in possession of a UK bike license gives you access to own/hire a bike anywhere in the world, how true is this?

The other thing is, i've had my license since october time and there are NO RESTRICTIONS out here whatsoever. Hence the reason for me riding a variety of sports bike with no concerns. Insurance all covered and everything. Now, the crunch issue, will i be able to transfer my license over to a UK one? Or will i HAVE to do the UK test?

I thought you could use your uk license in any country for 2 years, as in say if I moved to America, I could continue to ride a bike there for 2 years, untill I need to take the American bike test.

You would have to do the test because the United Arab Emirates is outwith European Union.

There will be differences in standards between the two tests. Hence the reason why you might need to do a test over here.

Yeh i know there is a HUGE difference in standards, my practical test consisted of riding in a figure of and riding on the road a couple of times being followed by a fat c*nt in a nissan sunny! And i didn't have a theory! Oh well, next question.

I'll be 18 this summer when i return to UK and i understand i'll obtain a 33 bhp license. Can i use this one abroad as well? And how often do people get pulled if their restrictors on the bike "fall out"? Not that i'd do anything like that Shifty

i just posted this in another thread

"yeah but how many times have people actually had their bikes tested to see if they are restricted

if they dont know if its restricted or not, how are you gonna have a problem ?

if you have an accident the police dont say, we need to take this bike in for testing

now there are lots of people on this forum, some have been done for speeding, some have lost their licenses but i have never heard of someone being found out as having an unrestricted bike when they are supposed to be restricted

if anyone knows different, pls tell us"

So it's possible to own any bike you want as long as it's restricted at the age of 17?

How does this work then? You buy the bike, install the restrictors, insure and register it...and then next week the restrictors fall out?

I like this Razz

You all must be f*cking good liars to get out of speeding fines or maxing your bike out etc Laughing

Most countries allow you to ride for 12 months as a visitor on your foreign licence. If you become resident and want to drive for longer, you have to get a local licence.

Here's some information specifically about coming to the UK.

Specifically, if you have an NI, EU, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man licence, or one from

Australia
Monaco
Barbados
New Zealand
British Virgin Islands
Republic of Korea (not bike)
Canada
Singapore
Falkland Islands
South Africa
Hong Kong
Switzerland
Japan
Zimbabwe

you can exchange it. Otherwise it's a test - though you can ride as a visitor / new resident for 12 months on your old licence.

If you are a visitor, you can ride for 12 months from the date of entry (leaving the UK and re-entering if necessay until your restriction has passed).

If you are resident, you can ride for 12 months from the date of residence.

I'd suggest you come over as a visitor for 12 months, then become resident here. Take your UK test as soon as you can, so that your 2 year restriction will be over when your foreign licence is no longer valid.

The only problem is that you may find you have a much higher insurance quote with a foreign licence from many companies, and if you are under 19 most companies won't be set up to quote you on a big unrestricted bike at all.

Of course, if you reach 21 during your first 12 months, you can just do the DAS test - you can ride your bike to the test centre without L plates (and even ride home if you fail) - and save any mucking about.

I like this, it basicaly means the UK has checked around the world and only these countries have good driving and test standards.

Its not simply commonwealth countries, Korea, Japan are all able to swap.

I have american relatives and from what i've been told, their standards are low.

Pretty funny that government thinks Canadians can drive and american's can not.

https://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/rdmcycle.htm

Quaker_boy, from what i understand at 17-21 you can take your FULL motorcycle test BUT have to have the bike restricted down to 33bhp, that in effect does mean you can ride any bike as long as it can be restricted. I think I'm right on that, check it out for your self.

I did the direct access for mine and was told that i could do the test on a 125 then get a bike restricted, (and unrestricted in garage down the road) I told em to stuff it i was doing the 500 as i had a 500 sat in my shed, no way was i gonna do a half measure job on my test lol.

Did anyone kow that if you hold a Norther Ireland Licence and get a ban on it the UK dont keep records of it. So you could come to the UK and apply for a new licence with out the ban or any points on it, resit your test and away ya go nice clean licence.

I thought this strange as Northern Irelend was supposed to be part of the UK but nope the DVLA have no records.

Down side is what do you do for insurance cos if you dont admit to the points or ban and have an accident and its found out then your not covered.

Good side to that is it dont make any difference to the Licence lol
