Hello everyone.

I've been watching this forum for a couple of weeks, and have just decided to register, as it looks pretty 'sensible' !

I'm new to motorbikes at 39, and have just passed my CBT, and bought a standard '99 Honda XLR 125.

The thing is, it really is pretty slow!.

Me being 6' tall and about 15 stone, it isn't the quickest bike on the planet with me on it.

Q - what are my options to get a bit more power out of the bike?, more acceleration really, but top end would be nice too as it seems to really run out of puff at about 55mph, making dual carriageways a bit of an ordeal.

Many thanks
Tim

Are they a 4-Stroke? If it is there's no way of 'de-restricting' it mate.

yes, a 4 stroke. er.... and I'm in England if that helps. Confused

In England, all 125's are restricted to give less HP - as laid down by the Government.

I was hoping that someone would come up with something like a magic exhaust system to give me an extra 6 HP!

Edited, - not realising that this forum may not be UK based! Embarassed

This forum is UK based.

Theres not anthing you can do to make it faster. Keep it serviced and keep the tyre pressures spot on to stop it getting any slower though.

For more speed, the solution is a bigger bike.

I cannot agree more, pass your test and flog off your bike. You can make your bike slightly "noisier" by lopping off the snorkle to your air box. This makes a deeper, bassier and louder exhaust note at the expense of throttle response and a bit of top end in 5th gear. But don't bother. The best bet is to keep chain at correct tension and service it at regular intervals Thumbs Up I have an 04 XR125, which is a similar type bike with a somewhat similar engine (in terms of output).

Not quite. The learner law limit the amount of power and capacity of a bike a learner might ride to 125cc and 11kW. Some bikes are restricted to produce under that amount. Others (such as the CBR125 and the XL125) do not need restricting as they already produce that amount or less of power.

You possibly can get some more power from it, but not much and do not expect it to be a quick fiddle with the exhaust. The 2 strokes might well double their power with some minor fiddles, but you are probably looking at 10%~20% at most, and to get that needing to do quite a bit of work (replace exhaust, probably cam, clean up head, etc).

All the best

Keith
